The purpose of this study is to clarify the interpretive methodology of I Ching (Book of Changes) established by Seongho Yi Ik based on the internal logic of Confucian classics. To Yi Ik, a Silhak (Practical Learning) scholar of the late Joseon Dynasty, Classical Studies (經學) was an essential process for embodying the "Way of the Sages." In particular, he viewed the I Ching (Book of Changes) as the quintessence of the "Learning of the Sages," wherein the Sages' intent was condensed into the structural system of hexagrams and lines. Consequently, under the guiding principle of “prioritizing the Classics over Histories”(先經後史), he viewed the Confucian canon as the primary interpretive criterion over historical narratives. His interpretive approach thus combined a reverent attitude toward the Classics with a spirit of rational critique independent of established authorities. Three distinctive features characterize Yi Ik’s interpretation of the I Ching: (1) rigorous philological analysis of hexagram and line statements through intertextual corroboration among the Confucian canon — Book of Odes, Book of Documents and Book of Rites ; (2) reconstruction of the symbolic meanings of hexagrams within the concrete contexts of ancient ritual and political order through evidential inquiry into ritual systems and material origins; and (3) reinterpretation of divinatory narratives in relation to the historical realities of the Yin–Zhou transition, thereby extending the significance of the I Ching from moral instruction to the principles of state governance. While retaining the orthodox orientation of moral-metaphysical interpretation (義理), Yi Ik objectified the meanings of the Classics through critical corroboration, thereby formulating an integrated hermeneutical model that united moral speculation and evidential scholarship. Moreover, by understanding the I Ching as a normative text embodying the principles of ancient political and ritual order, Yi Ik sought to restore the Confucian ideal of statecraft wherein ethical cultivation and institutional practice are unified. This methodology holds significant value in intellectual history, as it served as a methodological exemplar for the formation of "seeking truth from facts (實事求是)" scholarship in the late Joseon period, which was subsequently inherited by the Seongho School and Dasan Jeong Yak-yong.
