Drawing upon a post-structuralist perspective, this study explored how three male teachers in early childhood and elementary education experienced and (re)shaped gender norms and teacher identities. As researchers and participants, we employed a collaborative autoethnography to narratively document our individual teaching experiences, sharing these accounts with one another and interpreting them through iterative dialogue and reflection. We found that our experiences were inextricably intertwined with the gender norms and discourses prevalent within the teaching profession. Through reflection and dialogue, four common themes emerged. First, we found ourselves under pressure to self-discipline in accordance with specific gender norms expected of male teachers. Second, the school expected us to embody a narrative of success, demanding that we perform specific roles aligned with that expectation. Third, social discourses outside the school environment influenced both our professional experiences and our understanding of our own identities. Fourth, rather than passively accepting these prescribed identities, we engaged in identity (re)formation and challenged the conventional gendered performances assigned to male teachers within the profession, thereby creating subtle fissures in the reproduction of gender norms through academic reflection and career-related introspection. As a result, we found that male teachers are subject to discourses and active individuals who negotiate and reconstruct those very disciplines through their daily practices. The study served to extend existing research, which has often conceptualized male teachers as entities with fixed identities or reduced them to mere passive subjects. Thus, this study suggests the need for a teaching culture—encompassing both teacher education and the broader teaching profession—in which diverse enactments of identity by male teachers can be accepted.
