This study examines the iconographic structure and ritual significance of the Geumgang Beopgye Daeil Yeorae-hwa (金剛法界大日如來華), a type of Bud- dhist paper flower transmitted at Anjeongsa Temple in Samcheok, Korea, and explores its relationship with the concept of the mandala in Esoteric Buddhism. Various traditions of Buddhist paper flowers have been preserved at Anjeongsa through Venerable Dayeo. Among them, the Geumgang Beopgye Daeil Yeorae- hwa exists in two forms corresponding to the Garbhadhātu and Vajradhātu man- dalas. However, previous studies on Korean Buddhist paper flowers have rarely addressed their doctrinal meanings or their structural relationship to mandala symbolism. This study first investigates the doctrinal meanings of Mahāvairocana and the “Vajra Dharmadhātu Palace” (金剛法界宮) as described in esoteric Buddhist scriptures and commentaries, in order to clarify the textual background of the name Geumgang Beopgye Daeil Yeorae-hwa. It then analyzes the formal struc- ture of the paper flower transmitted at Anjeongsa and demonstrates that it em- bodies the spatial principles of the mandala—particularly the relationship between the center and the cardinal directions—in a three-dimensional form. Finally, the study examines how this paper flower has functioned within the ritual practices of Anjeongsa. Through this analysis, the Geumgang Beopgye Daeil Yeorae-hwa can be un- derstood not merely as a decorative object but as a three-dimensional mandalic structure that spatially represents the dharmadhātu presided over by Mahāvairo- cana through the medium of flowers. This study aims to provide a foundation for reinterpreting the tradition of Korean Buddhist paper flowers within the broader context of esoteric Buddhist ritual and doctrine. It also suggests the potential for future comparative studies with the Ryōkai Mandalas (Twofold Mandalas) of the Japanese Shingon tradition, which may fur- ther illuminate the regional transformations of mandalic representations in East Asian Esoteric Buddhism.

본 연구는 삼척 안정사에 전승된 불교 지화(紙華) 가운데 ‘금강법계대일여래화(金剛法界大日如來華)’의 조형 구조와 의례적 의미를 분석하고, 이를 밀교 만다라 사상과의 관련 속에서 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 안정사에는 다여 스님을 통해 다양한 불교 지화 전통이 전승되고 있으며, 그 가운데 금강법계대일여래화는 태장계와 금강계의 두 형식으로 전해지고있다. 그러나 지금까지 한국 불교 지화 연구에서는 이러한 조형물이 지닌교학적 의미와 만다라적 구조에 대한 체계적인 분석이 충분히 이루어지지않았다. 이에 본 연구는 먼저 밀교 경전과 주석서에 나타난 대일여래와 ‘금강법계궁(金剛法界宮)’의 교학적 의미를 검토하여 금강법계대일여래화라는 명칭의 경전적 배경을 밝힌다. 다음으로 안정사에 전승된 금강법계대일여래화의형태적 특징을 분석하여, 이 지화가 중심과 방위라는 만다라의 공간 구조를입체적으로 구현한 조형물임을 살펴본다. 마지막으로 이 지화가 안정사의불교 의례 속에서 어떠한 방식으로 사용되어 왔는지를 검토한다. 이를 통해 금강법계대일여래화는 단순한 장엄용 종이꽃이 아니라, 대일여래가 주재하는 법계의 구조를 꽃이라는 매체를 통해 공간적으로 구현한입체적 만다라 조형물로 이해될 수 있음을 제시하고자 한다. 이러한 연구는한국 불교 지화 전통을 밀교 의례와 교학의 맥락 속에서 재조명하는 기초자료가 될 것으로 기대된다. 나아가 본 연구는 안정사 지화의 양계 구조가 일본 진언종의 양계만다라전통과 비교 가능한 연구 대상으로 확장될 수 있음을 시사하며, 향후 동아시아 밀교 만다라의 조형적 전개를 종합적으로 이해하는 데 기여할 것으로보인다.
