The oldest surviving edition, HTYEN TJYOU SYENG KYO SIP I TAN (1886) contains 15 types of prayers[13 types if the Prayer of Faith, Hope, and Love is considered as one] without any markings or serial numbers. The composition of the 1886 edition of ‘Twelve Prayers’ became the standard and was maintained until the 1920s. In accordance with the decisions of the ‘Joseon Regional Council’ held in 1931, a new catechism, CHEON JU KYO YO RI MUN TAP, was published in 1934. Taking this opportunity, the title of ‘Twelve Prayers’ booklet was changed from HTYEN TJYOU SYENG KYO SIP I TAN to CHEON JU KYO SIP I TAN , and the included prayers and their order were also changed. The newly revised ‘Twelve Prayers’ was published and distributed as a standalone volume or as a combined edition titled CHEON JU KYO YO RI MUN TAP SIP I TAN . The confirmation of these 12 types of ‘Twelve Prayers’ and the change in their order are related to Article 12 of the ‘Decree’ [Content of Catechetical Education], which was a decision of the ‘Council of Joseon Region.’ The ‘EXPLICATIONES,’ included only in the Latin version of CHEON JU KYO YO RI MUN TAP , presents specific catechetical methods regarding ‘Twelve Prayers’. The order of the prayers was adjusted for the intellectual level of each stage and for ease of memorization, and prayers were added or their content was abbreviated. At the time of reorganizing the church system following the Korean War, the catechism and prayer books were reorganized. Although the composition of the catechism was changed by adding ‘prayer’ to the back of CHEON JU KYO YO RI MUN TAP (1954), the ‘SIP I TAN’=Twelve Prayers system was maintained. Following the Vatican Council II, the Ordinary of the Mass and the prayers were completely revised, and accordingly, the CATHOLIC PRAYER BOOK , which was reorganized into an official prayer book, was published in 1968. Prior to this, ‘SIP I TAN’ was renamed ‘Juyo kidomun(Main Prayers)’ in 1966, and the titles, content, and order of the prayers were newly reorganized. In the CATHOLIC PRAYER BOOK , the ‘Main Prayers’ were included in ‘Part 1: Daily Prayers,’ and the title of the prayers was changed to its current name. Although there were newly added and omitted prayers, 14 essential prayers for believers were included while formally maintaining the organization of 12 types of prayers. The CATHOLIC PRAYER BOOK , first published in 1968, was completely revised in 1972, but the ‘Main Prayers’ remained the same. Subsequently, the 1972 edition of the prayer book continued to be published, but the content of the ‘Main Prayers’ in the 1984 reprint was slightly changed. In the 1987 revised edition, the ‘Main Prayers’ were organized into 12 types and an appendix, totaling 13 types. In conjunction with the revision of the Ordinary of the Mass in 1996, a revised edition of the CATHOLIC PRAYER BOOK was published in 1997. The name of the Main Prayers was changed from ‘Juyo kidomun’ to ‘Juyo kido,’ and the number of prayers was expanded to 21. The existing format of 12 prayers was eliminated, and 7 new prayers were included as ‘Main Prayers.’ In the 2018 second revised edition of the CATHOLIC PRAYER BOOK , one prayer was added, bringing the total number of ‘Main Prayers’ to 22.

현존하는 가장 오래된 1886년 판 『텬쥬셩교십이단』에는 어떤 표시나 일련번호 없이 15종 기도[신·망·애 삼덕송을 하나의 기도로 보면 13종]가 수록되어 있다. 1886년 판 십이단의 편제가 정본이 되어 1920년대까지 유지되었다. 1931년 개최된 ‘조선 지역 공의회’의 결정 사항에 따라 1934년 새 교 리서 『천주교요리문답』이 간행되었다. 이를 계기로 십이단 책자는 『텬쥬 셩교십이단』이란 제목에서 『천주교십이단』으로 바뀌었고, 수록 기도문과 순서도 변하였다. 새로 개편된 십이단은 단행본이나 합본 『천주교요리문답십이단』에 수록되어 배포되었다. 이러한 12종 십이단의 확정과 그 순서 변경은 조선 지역 공의회의 결정사항인 ‘교령’ 12항[교리교육 내용]과 연관되어 있다. 『천주교요리문답』의 라틴어본에만 수록된 ‘EXPLICATIONES’(설명)에는 십이단과 관련하여 구체적인 교리교육 방안이 제시되어 있다. 단계별 지적 수준과 암기 편의를 위해 기도문 순서가 조정되고, 기도문이 추가되거나 기도문 내용이 축약되었다. 한국전쟁 이후 교회체제를 재정비하는 시점에서 교리서와 기도서의 재편이 이루어졌다. 1954년 판 『천주교요리문답』 뒷부분에 ‘기도문’이 첨가되는 형식으로 교리문답서의 편제가 바뀌었지만, 십이단=12종 체제는 유지했다. 제2차 바티칸공의회 이후 미사통상문과 기도문이 전면 개정되었고, 그에 따라 공식 기도서로 개편된 『가톨릭 기도서』가 1968년에 간행되었다. 이보다 앞서 십이단은 1966년 ‘주요 기도문’으로 이름이 바뀌면서 기도문의 제목과 내용, 순서도 새롭게 개편되었다. 『가톨릭 기도서』에서 ‘주요 기도문’은 ‘제1편 일상기도’에 수록되었는데, 기도문의 제목이 현재의 이름으로 바뀌었다. 새로 추가된 기도와 빠진 기도가 있었지만, 12종 기도 편제를 형식적으로 유지하면서도 신자들에게 필수적인 기도문 14종을 수록하였다. 1968년 초간 『가톨릭 기도서』는 1972년 전면적으로 개정되었지만 ‘주요 기도문’은 동일했다. 이후 1972년 판 기도서가 계속 간행되었는데, 1984년 중판의 ‘주요 기도문’ 내용이 약간 바뀌었다. 1987년 수정판에서 ‘주요 기도문’은 12종과 부록, 즉 13종으로 편성되었다. 1996년 미사통상문의 개정을 계기로 1997년 『가톨릭 기도서』 개정판이 간행되었다. ‘주요 기도문’은 ‘주요 기도’로 명칭이 바뀌었고, 21종 기도로 확대되었다. 기존의 12종 기도 편제 형식이 사라졌고, 새롭게 7종 기도가 ‘주요 기도’로 수록되었다. 2018년 『가톨릭 기도서』 재개정판에는 기도가 하나 추가되어 현재 ‘주요 기도’는 모두 22종이다.
