‘Babylon’ is a film that illuminates the light and shadows of Hollywood in the 1920s, called the ‘age of madness’, and depicts the splendor and dark side of the film industry as expressed in its process of changing to a meteor film. Damien Chazelle draws a vivid parallel between the hidden underbelly of 1920-1930s Hollywood and the ancient Mesopotamian city of Babylon. This paper introduces the director’s philosophy and vision, analyzing the artistic styles, cultural trends, and social changes that evolved before and after World War I. It also discusses the historical background of Hollywood’s birth and the development of the film industry, exploring the transformations in film production systems and the advancements in technology and equipment brought connects scenes from the film with Hollywood’s journey toward modern cinema, creating a moment in which Manny, gazing at these images, becomes one with the audience, together experiencing the grandeur and permanence of the cinematic art form. Accordingly, this study examines the characteristics of Hollywood cinema during the transition from silent to sound film after the birth of cinema in 1895, with the aim of reconsidering the historical experiences accumulated in the process through which contemporary cinema formed.

영화 <바빌론>은 소위 ‘광기의 시대’라 불리는 1920년대 할리우드의 화려한 모습과 그 이면에 숨겨진 어두운 그림자를 깊이 있게 투영한다. 특히 소리가 없는 무성영화에서 소리가 나오는 유성영화로 넘어가는 거대한 변화의 시기에 영화 산업이 보여 준 겉모습의 화려함과 그 뒤에 가려진 추악한 현실을 입체적으로 묘사한다. 데이미언 셔젤 감독은 당시 할리우드의 혼란스러 운 내면을 고대 도시 바빌론에 비유하며 영화 산업이 급격히 성장할 때 그 이면에서 번영과 쇠퇴가 어떻게 역설적으로 함께 나타나는지를 보여준다. 본 연구는 감독의 예술적 철학과 의도를 살펴보는 동시에 제1차 세계대전 전후의 다양한 예술 양식 과 사회적 변화를 분석하여 할리우드가 어떻게 탄생하고 발전했는지 그 과정을 면밀하게 고찰한다. 또한, 유성영화가 시작되 면서부터 영화 제작 방식이 어떻게 바뀌었는지 그리고 기술과 장비는 얼마나 비약적으로 발전했는지를 탐구한다. 아울러, 이 러한 기술적 토대 위에서 인물들의 서사가 병렬적으로 교차하는 구조를 다이아그램으로 만들어 서사의 특이점을 발췌하면서 영화적인 몰입감을 상승시키는 과정을 분석하였다. 특히 이 영화의 마지막 장면은 <바빌론> 속 장면들을 현대 영화의 역사적 흐름과 하나로 연결하며 주인공 매니의 시선과 관객의 시선이 마주치는 순간, 영화라는 예술이 얼마나 끈질긴 생명력을 가졌 는지 생생하게 보여주며 상징적으로 나타낸다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 1895년 영화 탄생 이후 무성에서 유성으로 바뀌던 시기 할리우드 영화만의 특징을 밝혀내고 이러한 역사적 경험들이 오늘날의 영화가 만들어지는 데 어떤 중요한 의미를 갖는지 되 짚어보고자 한다.
