The purpose of this study is to examine the operational logic of picaresque narratives in Korean dramas from the perspective of world design and to propose a structural model that accounts for this process. While previous studies have largely considered anti-heroes in terms of individual morality or deviance, this article investigates how anti-heroic agency is rationalized within the narrative world’s operational logic and cost structures. To this end, it critically reworks Campbell’s Hero’s Journey and develops an “8-Node Cyclical Model” as an analytical tool that captures the non-teleological and non-ascending structure of the picaresque narrative. As a case analysis, The Price of Confession and Dear X were selected, as each is set within a distinct institutional environment—the judicial system and the entertainment industry, respectively. The analysis compares how value assets such as judicial data and reputational power function as core operational principles of the world. The findings show that both texts share a picaresque worldview that blocks official routes to resolution by treating institutional failures as a structural constant. In this process, the iterative operational loop transforms informal norms into technical performances for survival and the acquisition of power, thereby rationalizing the anti-hero’s unethical choices. Although the two texts exhibit typological differences in terms of their strategies and responses depending on the nature of the value assets at stake, they ultimately converge on a cyclical ending in which an irrational system persists without the restoration of justice. These findings suggest that picaresque narratives are not merely genre variations but products of a sophisticated world design that reflects contemporary power dynamics and the structures of social perception.

본 연구의 목적은 한국 드라마 속 피카레스크 서사의 작동 원리를 세계관 디자인 관점에서 분석하고, 이를 설명하기 위한 구 조적 모델을 구성하는 데 있다. 기존 연구가 반영웅을 주로 개인의 도덕성이나 일탈의 문제로 고찰했다면, 본고는 인물의 행 위성이 세계의 운영 논리 및 비용 구조 내에서 어떻게 합리화되는지 검토한다. 이를 위해 캠벨의 ‘영웅의 여정’을 비판적으로 참조하여, 피카레스크 특유의 비목적론적·비상승적 구조를 반영한 ‘8노드 순환 모델’을 새로운 분석 도구로 구축하였다. 사례 분석으로는 사법 체계와 연예 산업이라는 상이한 제도적 환경을 배경으로 한 <자백의 대가>와 <친애하는 X>를 선정하였다. 이를 통해 각각 사법 데이터와 평판 권력이라는 가치 자산이 세계관의 핵심 운영 원리로 기능하는 메커니즘을 비교 분석하였 다. 연구 결과, 두 텍스트는 제도적 실패를 구조적 상수로 설정함으로써 공식적 해결 경로를 차단하는 피카레스크적 세계관을 공유하고 있었다. 이 과정에서 반복적 운영 루프는 비공식 규범을 생존과 권력 획득을 위한 기술적 수행으로 전환시키며, 반 영웅의 비윤리적 선택을 합리화하는 기제로 작동함을 확인하였다. 두 텍스트는 점유하는 가치 자산의 성격에 따라 행위 전략 과 대응 방식에서 유형적 차이를 보였으나, 궁극적으로는 정의의 회복 없이 부조리한 체제가 영속되는 순환적 결말로 수렴한 다는 공통점이 도출되었다. 이러한 논의는 피카레스크 서사가 장르적 변주를 넘어, 동시대의 권력 작동 방식과 사회적 인식 구조를 투영하는 정교한 세계관 디자인의 산물임을 시사한다.
