This study aims to investigate the possible existence of an edition that predates the 1566 Anguksa Temple edition of Yesu siwangsaeng chiljaeui chanyo (預修十王生七齋儀纂要), which has been known as the earliest version, by examining the newly confirmed Cheongyangsa Temple edition.
The Cheongyangsa Temple edition is a newly discovered version among the various extant editions of Yesu siwangsaeng chiljaeui chanyo. It is currently housed at Seonwoonsa Temple and was verified to have been published in 1574. This book has two colophons at the end. One of them reads, “This book was published at Simwonsa Temple in Hwanghae-do in 1532.” It attracts attention as a published record indicating that it predates 1566, the year regarded as the first publication date of Yesu siwangsaeng chiljaeui chanyo. The study reviewed these colophons by comparing them with similar cases that contain two colophons, analyzing the lineages of the Yesu siwangsaeng chiljaeui chanyo editions and the content of their colophons, and cross-checking them against historical records concerning Yesujae. The findings demonstrate the possible existence of the edition of Yesu siwangsaeng chiljaeui chanyo published at Simwonsa Temple in 1532 and predates 1566.
