A Case Study on the Experience of University Student Human Rights Supporters - Focusing on the Case of K University -
This study aims to deeply investigate the impact of ‘Human Rights Supporters’ activities, as a part of participatory human rights education within universities, on the change of university students’ human rights awareness and practical attitudes. For this purpose, a qualitative case study was conducted by performing in-depth interviews and analyzing activity data of 12 students who completed the Human Rights Supporters program at K University. The results of the study revealed that participants experienced integrated changes in cognitive, emotional, and behavioral dimensions. First, in the cognitive dimension, participants re-conceptualized human rights not as abstract legal principles but as concrete issues of daily life, and acquired a perspective to interpret everyday spaces within a socio-structural context. Second, in the emotional dimension, based on the awareness and reflection of their own privileges, they cultivated a rights-based sense of solidarity beyond mere charitable sympathy for others. Third, in the behavioral dimension, they internalized an identity as active ‘human rights advocates’ in the process of identifying on-campus human rights issues and seeking solutions, which led to a change in career values that emphasize public interest and professional ethics. In particular, student-led participatory learning methods—such as voluntary planning, discussion, and campaign execution—acted as key factors in overcoming the limitations of traditional lecture-based education and strengthening learners’ human rights sensitivity and practical competencies. In conclusion, this study proves the effectiveness of human rights supporter activities as a practice-oriented educational model within universities and proposes that future university human rights education needs to transition from simple knowledge transmission to a field-oriented learning structure centered on experience and reflection.
