This study compares the sugeon dance traditions of the Yeongnam and Honam regions to examine regional distinctions and cultural significance. Through literature analysis, comparative video review, and archival research, it identifies differences in rhythmic structure, handkerchief technique, and stage adaptation. The Yeongnam tradition reflects the formal aesthetics and restrained movement style associated with court dance through its Gyobang and Gwonbeon lineages. In contrast, the Honam tradition demonstrates dynamic expressiveness through the interplay of regular and syncopated rhythms and diverse handkerchief techniques. Centered on the respective transmission lineages, both traditions have formed significant strands in modern Korean dance while reinforcing regional identity and community cohesion. However, the study confirms the need to establish a comprehensive digital archive and strengthen international accessibility. By exmining regional diversity within the shared genre of sugeon dance, this study provides foundational material for the globalization of Korean traditional dance and discussions on cultural heritage.

본 연구는 영호남 지역의 「수건춤」을 비교하여 지역적 차별성과 문화적 가치 파악에 목적을 두고 문헌 분석, 영상 비교, 아카이브 조사를 하였다. 그 결과 두 지역은 장단 구성과 수건의 사용법, 무대화 과정에서 차이가 나타났다. 「영남 수건춤」은 교방과 권번 계보를 통해 궁중무용의 형식미와 절제된 움직임이 나타나며, 「호남 수건춤」은 정박과 엇박의 조화와 수건의 다양한 사용으로 생동감 있는 표현미를 지닌다. 두 지역 수건춤 은 ‘하규일-정소산-백년욱’, ‘전계문-한성준-김보남-신관철’을 중심으로 각각의 전승 계 보를 통해 근대 한국무용사의 중요한 축을 형성하며 지역 정체성과 공동체성을 강화해 왔다. 다만 통합적 디지털 아카이브 구축과 국제적 접근성 강화가 필요함을 확인하였다. 즉 동일한 종목명으로 존재한 ‘「수건춤」’을 살핌으로써 지역적 다양성을 파악하였으며 이는 전통춤의 세계화 모색과 유네스코 인류무형유산 등재 논의에 대한 기초 자료를 제공한다.
