This study aims to develop a sheet type bio-textile, referred to as rice leather, using rice bran, an agricultural by product, as the primary material, and to explore its potential as a sustainable fashion material. Conventional natural leather production has raised persistent environmental and ethical concerns, leading to increasing demand for alternative materials. Although various forms of bio-leather have been developed, research that integrates region based resources with design applications remains relatively limited. This study focuses on rice bran, an underutilized by product of Korean agriculture, and seeks to expand its material potential into fashion textiles. The research adopts Practice-Led Research as its methodological framework and follows the iterative cyclic web model, in which creative experimentation, applied practice, and reflective theorization interact in a continuous cycle. During the creative experimentation stage, five rounds of material trials were conducted to fabricate bio-based sheets using rice bran and alginate, systematically analyzing the effects of glycerin content, mixing methods, aging conditions, drying processes, and mold types on material properties. To address the inherent brittleness and fragility of the material, a sandwich-type bonding structure incorporating cotton fabric was developed, resulting in sufficient durability and sewability for garment construction. In the design application stage, the material limitation of a maximum sheet size of 25×25 cm was reframed as a design opportunity through the application of traditional Korean Jogakbo patchwork techniques and hand stitching. Based on this approach, a reversible vest and a wrap skirt were produced. This study is significant in that it transforms the material limitations of rice bran into a distinctive design identity, while demonstrating the potential of practice-led research that integrates material development and fashion design. Furthermore, it provides foundational insight into the commercial scalability of bio-textiles in the future sustainable fashion industry.
