By examining the structure of violence, concealment, and justice through a socio-psychological lens, this study reinterprets the Korean folktale variant of the Yun Dong-ok legend, a version of the Arang narrative. While previous scholarship has focused primarily on the motif of the vengeful female ghost, narrative structure, and the restoration of moral order, this research shifts attention to the psychological and structural conditions under which violence emerges. It employs Stanley Milgram’s theory of obedience to authority as its primary analytical framework. The analysis applies key concepts from Milgram’s theory, such as the legitimacy of authority, the agentic state, the diffusion of responsibility, gradual escalation, and situational pressure, to the characters and events within the tale. The local official’s abuse of power is interpreted as a misuse of institutional authority, the nursemaid’s cooperation as an entry into the agentic state, and the community’s silence as a collective diffusion of responsibility, reinforced by distorted social proof. Violence in the narrative thus appears not as an isolated moral failure but as a product of hierarchical authority structures combined with a culture of obedience. The step-by-step progression from enticement to murder, concealment, and collective silence parallels the mechanism of gradual escalation observed in Milgram’s experiments. This tale demonstrates how violence develops incrementally through small acts of compliance and the accumulation of silence. Furthermore, the symbolic “red flag” functions as a form of social evidence that disrupts the existing authority structure and enables the restoration of legitimate authority, thereby halting the cycle of violence. By reexamining the Yun Dong-ok legend through Milgram’s theory, this study presents the tale not solely as a ghost narrative but as a narrative of structural violence shaped by authority and obedience. This interdisciplinary approach expands the methodological horizon of Korean folktale studies and offers critical insights into the contemporary issues of authority abuse, collective silence, and ethical responsibility.

본 연구는 아랑전설의 변이인 <윤동옥 전설>을 중심으로, 설화 속에 내재된 폭 력의 발생과 은폐, 그리고 정의 회복의 과정을 사회심리학적 관점에서 재해석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 기존 연구가 원혼 설화의 구조나 해원(解寃) 형식, 여성 피해 서사에 주목해 온 것과 달리, 본 연구는 폭력이 발생하는 심리적․구조적 조건에 초점을 맞추어 스탠리 밀그램의 ‘권위에 대한 복종’ 이론을 분석 틀로 도입하였다. 연구는 설화 속 인물 관계와 사건 전개를 ‘권위의 정당성’, ‘에이전트 상태’, ‘책 임 전가’, ‘점진적 강화’, ‘상황의 힘’이라는 밀그램의 핵심 개념과 대응시켜 분석하 였다. 통인의 권력 남용은 제도적 권위의 오용 사례로, 유모의 협조는 에이전트 상 태에 진입한 복종 행위로, 공동체의 침묵은 집단적 책임 분산과 사회적 증거 체계 의 왜곡으로 해석되었다. 이를 통해 설화 속 폭력은 개인의 악의가 아니라 권위 구 조와 복종 문화가 결합된 결과임을 밝혔다. 특히 ‘유인–살해–은폐–침묵’으로 이어지는 단계적 전개는 밀그램 실험에서 확인된 점진적 강화 구조와 유사한 심리적 경로를 보이며, 폭력이 단번에 발생하 는 것이 아니라 작은 합의와 침묵의 축적을 통해 완성된다는 점을 드러낸다. 또한 붉은 깃대의 상징은 기존 왜곡된 권위 체계를 전환시키는 사회적 증거로 기능하며, 정당한 권위의 회복이 폭력 중단의 핵심 조건임을 보여준다. 본 연구는 <윤동옥 전설>을 단순한 원귀 서사가 아니라 권위와 복종의 상호작 용 속에서 구조화된 폭력의 서사로 재해석함으로써, 전통 설화 연구에 사회심리학 적 접근을 접목한 새로운 분석 가능성을 제시한다. 나아가 이는 현대 사회에서 반 복되는 권위 오용과 집단적 침묵 문제를 성찰하는 인문학적 자원으로서 설화의 동 시대적 의미를 확장한다.
