This study investigates elementary school teachers’ awareness and practice of multicultural education in Gyeongsangbuk-do, a non-metropolitan region in Korea. Using a survey administered to 125 elementary school teachers, the study examines teachers’ levels of awareness and practice, differences according to background variables, and relationships among key variables through quantitative analysis, complemented by qualitative analysis of open-ended responses. The findings reveal that teachers demonstrated a high level of awareness of Korea’s transition toward a multicultural society and generally recognized schools’ social and educational roles. However, teachers perceived institutional preparedness for multicultural education to be insufficient, indicating a gap between awareness and practical implementation. While awareness levels were high, practical experience remained relatively limited, whereas self-efficacy was reported at a moderate and stable level. Training experience, experience as a homeroom teacher in multicultural classrooms, and employment in schools with higher proportions of multicultural students were significantly associated with higher levels of practice. Correlation analysis further revealed significant positive relationships among awareness, practice, and self-efficacy. Teachers identified language barriers and difficulties in communication with parents from multicultural backgrounds as major challenges in implementing multicultural education, underscoring the need for systematic institutional support. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening regional support systems, promoting practice-oriented teacher training, and enhancing school- and community-level support mechanisms to facilitate the effective implementation of multicultural education in non-metropolitan contexts.

본 연구는 다문화사회로의 급격한 전환을 경험하고 있는 비수도권 지역인 경상북도 초등학교 교사들의 다문화교육에 대한 인식과 실천 현황을 파악하고, 교사의 배경변인 에 따라 다문화교육 인식과 실천에 어떠한 차이가 나타나는지, 그리고 인식·실천·자기 효능감 간의 관계가 어떻게 형성되는지를 규명하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 경상북 도 소재 초등학교 교사 125명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였으며, 양적 분석과 개방 형 응답에 대한 질적 분석을 병행하였다. 연구 결과, 교사들은 다문화사회로의 변화와 학교의 사회적·교육적 역할에 대해 전반적으로 높은 인식 수준을 보였으나, 실제 수업 및 학교 현장에서의 준비도와 실천 수준은 상대적으로 낮게 나타나 인식과 실천 간의 차이가 확인되었다. 실천 경험은 전반적으로 제한적인 반면, 자기효능감은 비교적 높 은 수준을 보였다. 또한 연수 경험, 다문화학급 담임 경험, 다문화학생 비율이 높은 학 교 근무 경험에 따라 실천 경험에서 유의한 차이가 나타났으며, 주요 변인 간에는 유의 미한 상관관계가 확인되었다. 교사들은 다문화교육 실천 과정에서 언어 및 의사소통의 한계를 주요 어려움으로 인식하였고, 특히 다문화 가정 학부모와의 소통 부족을 문제 로 지적하였다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구는 비수도권 지역 학교 여건을 고려한 지원 체계 강화와 실습 중심의 교사 연수 확대의 필요성을 제언한다.
