This study aims to explore the experiences and meanings of career transition among adult learners with migrant backgrounds who participated in a multicultural psychological counseling program offered as an extracurricular activity at a cyber university. A narrative inquiry approach was employed. The participants were adult learners with migrant backgrounds enrolled in a cyber university, and data were collected through in-depth interviews and reflective materials. The data were interpreted from a narrative inquiry perspective, focusing on how participants reconstructed and made meaning of their life experiences over time by examining narrative contexts, turning experiences, and processes of meaning-making. The findings show that participants’ career transitions were triggered by a growing awareness of the limited sustainability of their existing life patterns, which had largely centered on maintaining their livelihoods. Through reflection on life values and meanings, their perceptions of career gradually changed. Values such as family, responsibility, dignity, and a sustainable life emerged as key criteria organizing their career choices. Participants began to recognize themselves as agents of choice and sought new directions for their lives. Life after the transition did not appear as a completed outcome but rather as an ongoing process shaped through continued learning, practical engagement, and the adjustment of relationships. These findings suggest that career counseling and educational interventions for adult learners with migrant backgrounds should move beyond approaches focused primarily on providing occupational information and instead expand toward narrative approaches that emphasize reflection on life values and meanings.

본 연구는 사이버대학 비교과 다문화 심리상담에 참여한 이주배경 성인학습자의 진 로전환 경험과 의미를 내러티브 탐구 방법을 통해 심층적으로 탐색하는 데 목적이 있 다. 연구참여자는 사이버대학에 재학 중인 이주배경 성인학습자이며, 심층 면담과 성 찰자료를 수집하였다. 수집된 자료는 참여자의 삶의 경험이 시간적 흐름 속에서 어떻 게 재구성되고 의미화되는지를 중심으로 이야기의 맥락, 전환경험, 의미구성 과정을 탐색하는 내러티브 탐구의 관점에서 해석하였다. 연구결과, 참여자들의 진로전환은 생 계유지를 중심으로 유지되던 삶의 상태에서 기존 생활방식의 지속 가능성에 대한 인식 변화로 촉발되었으며, 이후 삶의 기준과 의미관점에 대한 성찰을 통해 진로 인식이 변 화하는 과정으로 전개되었다. 이 과정에서 가족, 책임, 존엄, 지속 가능한 삶과 같은 가 치가 진로 선택을 조직하는 핵심 기준으로 작용하였고, 참여자들은 선택의 주체로서 자신의 삶을 재인식하며 새로운 방향을 모색하였다. 전환 이후의 삶은 완결된 결과라 기보다 학습의 지속, 실천, 관계 조정을 통해 지속적으로 형성되는 과정으로 나타났다. 이는 이주배경 성인학습자의 진로상담 및 교육 개입은 직업 정보제공 중심의 접근을 넘어 삶의 기준과 의미 성찰을 중심으로 한 서사적 접근으로 확장될 필요가 있음을 시사한다.
