The silent lover in The Silence of Love is reminiscent of Hwarang in Hyangga. They were the incarnation of Maitreya in a past life or were implied as figures to relieve social anxiety. This reminds us of Han Yong-un's lover, who was a religious object and patriot. Accordingly, this study compared the works in The Silence of Love that share images with Hyangga. First, Mojukjiranga has something in common in that he looks back on the time with Lover through “Wrinkle” and turning one's eyes. However, the attitudes toward the road and night were confirmed to be somewhat playful. In addition, Changiparanga has something in common with the movement of opening the door and looking at the moon. However, a difference exists in treating high places with anxiety and tension. The speakers of the two episodes of Hyangga and The Silence of Love discover the identity between the lover and themselves based on communication through silence. Here, the paradox of communication through silence is also based on the idea of Buddhism, but to overcome the lover and the speaker's own discernment is possible only when a role of a word that can be both positive and negative exists. These words originated from the language view and technique of Silla Buddhist literature, and The Silence of Love revived this tradition.

『님의 침묵』에서 침묵하는 님의 사례는 향가에 등장하는 화랑 형상을 연상하게 한다. 『삼국유사』에서 죽지랑은 전생에 미륵의 화신이었던 것으로, 기파랑은 사회적 불안을 해소할 존재로 암시되곤 했다. 이는 종교적 대상이자 애국자였던 한용운의 님을 떠올리게 한다. 이에 따라 향가와 심상을 공유하는 『님의 침묵』 소재 작품들을 비교하였다. 우선 <모죽지랑가>와는 ‘주름살’과 ‘눈 돌이키는 장면’을 통해 님과 나의 시간을 돌아본다는 공통점이 있다. 그러나 ‘가는 길’과 ‘잘 밤’에 대한 태도가 다소 유희적으로 달라진 모습을 확인하였다. 또한 <찬기파랑가>와는 ‘문을 열어젖힘’의 동작과 ‘달’을 통해 세상의 역설을 발견한다는 공통점이 있다. 다만 ‘드높은 곳’을 불안과 긴장을 지니며 대한다는 차이점도 알게 되었다. 두 편의 향가와 『님의 침묵』의 화자들은 침묵을 통한 소통을 바탕으로 상대방과 자신 사이의 동일성을 발견했다. 님과 화자 자신의 분별을 넘어서려면 침묵이라는 정적인 상태를 소통이라는 동적인 양상과 분별하지 않아야 했다. 이러한 역설은 불교 특유의 발상에 따른 것이기도 하지만, 긍정과 부정이 동시에 가능한 시어의 역할이 있어야 가능하다. 그런 시어는 의상과 원효가 구축했던 신라 불교시의 언어관과 기법에서 비롯된 것으로, 『님의 침묵』은 이러한 전통을 부흥했다는 가치가 있다.
