This article reinterprets Luke 15:11–32 and the Return of the Prodigal Son paintings by Rembrandt and Sieger Köder from the perspective of hospitality, arguing that both the biblical text and the two artworks should be read not as narratives that declare the completion of grace, but as open texts that interrogate the forms and procedures of hospitality. Whereas traditional interpretations have primarily focused on the restoration of the younger son and the father’s unconditional mercy, this study turns its attention to the final scene of the parable, in which the elder son remains outside the banquet in silence. This unresolved ending reveals that, at the communal level, hospitality remains incomplete. Accordingly, the central question posed by the text is shifted away from the outcome of hospitality toward a procedural inquiry into how hospitality is to be determined and shared within a community. On the basis of this problem consciousness, the article adopts Letty M. Russell’s concept of “just hospitality” as its theoretical framework, seeking to redefine hospitality not as an act of personal benevolence or moral virtue, but as a process-oriented, communal practice. Through this, the article aims to propose pastoral approaches to communal hospitality characterized by shared participation within contemporary church communities.

본 논문은 누가복음 15장 11-32절, 그리고 렘브란트와 지커 쾨더의 그림 <탕자의 귀향>을 환대(hospitality)의 관점에서 재해석하고, 성서 본 문과 두 그림이 은혜의 완결을 선언하는 이야기라기보다 환대의 방식과 절차를 묻는 열린 본문임을 논증한다. 기존 해석이 주로 작은아들의 회복 과 아버지의 무조건적인 자비에 초점을 맞추어 왔다면, 본 연구는 비유의 결말에서 큰아들이 잔치 밖에 머문 채 침묵하는 장면에 주목하여, 환대가 공동체적 차원에서는 아직 완성되지 않은 상태로 남아 있음을 밝힌다. 이 를 통해 본문이 제기하는 핵심 문제를 환대의 결과가 아니라, 환대가 어떻 게 결정되고 공유될 것인지에 대해 절차적 질문으로 전환한다. 이러한 문 제의식을 바탕으로 본 논문은 레티 M. 러셀이 제시한 ‘공정한 환대(just hospitality)’ 개념을 이론적 토대로 삼아, 환대를 개인의 선의나 도덕적 미 덕에 따른 호의를 넘어서 과정 중심의 공동체적 실천으로 재정의하고자 한다. 이를 통해 오늘날 교회 공동체 안에서 ‘함께’ 참여하는 공동체적 환 대에 대한 목회적 방안을 제시하고자 한다.
