We address one of the most challenging grammatical domains for second language learners—the English article system—which poses particular difficulty for Korean learners whose first language lacks articles. We propose a reanalysis of the English article system through the dual lens of cognitive domains and hearerorientedness. We argue that article choice can be systematically explained by the speaker’s assessment of the hearer’s knowledge state: the is used when the referent is assumed to be identifiable to the hearer, while a(n) is used when it lies outside the hearer’s knowledge or denotes a type or subset. We demonstrate that this perspective integrates earlier theoretical accounts of definiteness, familiarity, and determination into a coherent explanatory model grounded in cognition and interaction. Furthermore, we highlight the pedagogical implications of this approach, showing that it enables learners to interpret article use not as a set of arbitrary rules but as a reflection of shared knowledge and discourse accessibility. Through this study, we contribute to both linguistic theory and second language pedagogy by providing a unified, cognitively grounded explanation of English article use that connects grammatical form, communicative intent, and hearer orientation.
