This study investigates how the non-linear narrative structure of the musical Sunday in the Park with George shapes and influences the development and formation of character relationships. In doing so, the thesis not only supplements the limitations of prior scholarship that has primarily addressed non-linear plots in terms of disrupted, rearranged, or re-ordered temporal sequences, but also foregrounds Georges Seurat’s pointillism as a transferable compositional principle in the musical’s dramaturgy. By analyzing the ways pointillist aesthetics are translated into musical and linguistic organization and scenic construction, the study focuses on how a non-linear “arrangement structure”—formed through the repetition, variation, and juxtaposition of musical motifs and thematic units—affects inter-character relational dynamics. Based on the contrasting temporal frames and event configurations of Acts I and II, the research examines how conflicts and emotions are intensified and reconfigured through non-linear plotting, and clarifies the broader implications of such narrative strategies. To this end, the thesis conducts narratological and dramaturgical analyses of the script and score of Sunday in the Park with George. The findings indicate that the approximately 100-year temporal leap between Acts I and II enables a distinctive evolution of character relationships that cannot be realized within a conventional linear plot. Rather than producing “resolution” in a traditional sense, the work reorganizes relational meaning through the fragmentation of narrative elements and their formal re-arrangement via repetition, symmetry, and variation. In particular, this temporal discontinuity foregrounds the themes of artistic legacy and affective connection across time, while encouraging audiences’ interpretive and critical engagement with fragmented relationships. In this respect, the musical’s non-linear dramaturgy may be understood as an aesthetic achievement that expands the possibilities of contemporary musical theatre.

본 연구는 뮤지컬 <조지와 함께한 일요일 공원에서>을 대상으로 비선형 서사 구조가 인물의 관계 발전과 형성에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 탐구하는 것에 목적을 둔다. 본 논문에서는 비선형 플롯의 시간 배열이나 교란 및 재배열을 다룬 선행 연구의 한계를 보완하는 것은 물론, 조르주 쇠라의 점묘법이 뮤지컬의 음악과 언어, 그리고 장면 구성 원리를 분석하면서 음악 동기와 모티프의 반복·변주 및 병렬의 비선형적 ‘배열 구조’ 형성이 캐릭터 간의 관계에 미치는 영향에 주목하였다. 이는 비선형 플롯을 통한 1막과 2막의 서로 다른 시간과 사건의 배열을 통해 인물들이 어떻게 갈등과 감정을 심화시키고 해결하는지를 살펴보면서, 비선형 서사의 특징적 함의를 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 <조지와 함께한 일요일 공원에서>의 대본, 악보를 서사학적·드라마투르기적 분석에 근거하여 분석을 수행하였다. 분석 결과, 1막과 2막 사이의 약 100년에 걸친 시간 도약은 선형적 플롯으로는 구현할 수 없는 독특한 인물 관계의 진화를 가능하게 하는 것으로 나타났다. 이야기의 결말 방식은 ‘해결’이 아닌 관계의 파편화를 통해 반복과 대칭 및 변주로 형식을 재배열하면서 관계의 의미를 새로이 구성하였다. 특히 이러한 시간적 비 연속성은 시간 너머에서 예술적 유산, 정서적 연결이라는 주제를 한층 두드러지게 하면서, 파편화된 관계의 해석적·비판적 참여를 촉진한다는 점에서 현대 뮤지컬 드라마투르기의 미학적 성취로 평가될 수 있다.
