Examining teachers’ roles in enhancing students’ academic performance in the Korean context : A gap analysis

- Purpose of the Study : South Korea's widening socioeconomic gaps challenge educational equity despite government reforms in university admissions and educational policy. Teachers face persistent difficulties due to insufficient knowledge, motivation, and organizational resources. This case study employed Clark and Estes' gap analysis framework to examine factors affecting teacher effectiveness in supporting student achievement at a Christian-founded high school in Seoul where teachers from diverse religious backgrounds work within the school's faith-based mission. Research Content and Method : Survey data and interviews were collected from teachers to examine knowledge, motivation, and organizational factors affecting teacher effectiveness. The study investigated how these three domains influence teachers' capacity to support student achievement within the context of the school's Christian institutional identity. Conclusions and Suggestions : Survey data identified gaps in teachers' factual and procedural knowledge, motivational challenges including low job satisfaction, and insufficient organizational resources. Interview findings revealed that both Christian and non-Christian teachers valued the school's Christian institutional identity, describing values-based leadership and community culture as supporting their professional work. Recommendations include implementing servant leadership principles and strengthening professional learning communities aligned with the school's Christian institutional mission to enhance teacher effectiveness and student achievement.

- 한국에 복음이 들어오고, 교회가 설립된 것은 19세기 말이었다. 해방이 되면서 한국교회는 더욱 발전하게 되었고 그에 따라 기독교교육의 중요성과 필요성도 강조되게 되었다. 그러한 과정에 기독교교육을 전공한 학자들이 귀국함에 따라 그들을 중심으로 한국기독교교육학회를 결성할 필요성을 느껴 설립하게 되었다. 한국기독교교육학회의 설립 목적은 기독교교육학의 이론적 발전과 실천을 위한 연구와 장을 확대해가려는 것이다. 그리고 학자들간의 연구교류와 교제를 위한 장을 마련하기 위하여 본 학회를 1960년에 설립하였다.
