Building learning and faith community in online learning and engaging Christian college students based on intrinsic motivation
Purpose of Research : Christian universities are called to address fragmentation and alienation in contemporary learning environments and to serve as spaces for the restoration of faith communities. As online learning becomes central in higher education, forming learning and faith communities and encouraging active learner participation in online settings have become critical concerns. This study explores strategies for building learning and faith communities in online learning and examines ways to enhance online learners’ participation through intrinsic motivation.
Research Content and Method : This study examines two research questions: (1) What is the significance of learning and faith communities for learner participation in online learning? and (2) How can Christian universities engage online learners in these communities? To address these questions, a literature review was conducted on community and sense of community in online learning and on intrinsic motivation theories related to learner participation. Implications for community building through intrinsic motivation were then derived.
Conclusion and Suggestions : The findings show that intrinsic motivation plays a key role in online learning participation and the activation of faith communities among Christian university students. Major influencing factors include personalized education, structured online technologies, continuous communication, spiritual growth and faith maturity, self-reflection and self-regulation, and instructor?learner relationships grounded in a personal relationship with God. Accordingly, effective strategies include personalized online learning approaches, interactive participation structures, opportunities for spiritual formation, and an integrative approach to learning and faith. These strategies can enhance intrinsic motivation and promote participation in learning and faith communities in online-centered higher education.
