This study aims to analyze the relationship between railway construction, urban development, and changes in urban areas, focusing on Shenyang, Hohhot, and Wuhan that grew into hubs of China’s modern railways based on the analysis of historical literature and various map data. The results are as follows. The urban development and changes in urban areas of Shenyang, Hohhot, and Wuhan before and after the construction of the railway show a common trend: first, road construction and maintenance projects connecting railway stations and existing urban areas; second, the increase in development projects around railway stations centered on modern urban functions such as commerce, manufacturing and distribution industry; third, expansion of existing urban areas and new development areas around railway stations; and fourth, integration of existing urban areas and new development areas. However, specific aspects differ from city to city, and this is due to a combination of factors, including the characteristics of the railway construction process, the urban core and road system prior to railway construction, and the existing urban spatial order represented by the composition of urban districts. In particular, the development pattern of the area around the railway station, which reflects the subject and intention of railway construction and the location characteristics of the railway (station), is bringing about differences in the reorganization of the spatial order of the existing urban area, the area around the railway station, and the transition area between them. And the results are influencing all aspects, including the subsequent urban development patterns and expansion patterns of urban areas, as well as the reorganization of urban transportation networks, urban functional regional structures, and urban axis reorganization patterns.

본 연구는 중국 근대 철도의 거점으로 성장한 도시인 심양과 후허하오터, 무한을 중심으로 철도 건설과 도시개발 및 도시구역의 변화양상 사이의 관계를 분석해보고자 하였다. 중국의 근대 철도 건설은 다양한 주체의 철도건설 의도가 복합적으로 작용하 여 건설방식이나 철도의 역할이 다양하게 나타나고 있다. 이러한 철도 건설의 특성은 도시가 간직하고 있던 고유의 특성과 결합되면서 도시별로 철도가 도시공간질서의 변 화과정에 미치는 영향이 다양한 모습으로 나타난다. 지지류와 철도 건설사를 중심으로 한 문헌자료 분석과 각종 지도자료를 활용한 도시구조와 형태에 대한 분석을 토대로 철도 건설과 도시개발 및 도시구역의 변화양상을 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 철도 건설을 전후한 심양과 후허하호터, 무한의 도시개발과 도시구역의 변화 양상에 는 1단계 철도역과 기존 도시구역을 연결하는 도로 확충정비, 2단계 공업과 상업·유통 업등 근대적 도시기능을 중심으로 한 철도역 주변지역 개발, 3단계 기존 도시구역의 확장과 철도역 주변 신개발구역의 확장, 4단계 기존 도시구역과 철도역 주변 신개발구 역의 통합으로 이어지는 보편적 흐름이 나타나고 있다. 그러나 구체적인 양상은 도시 별로 차이를 나타내고 있는데 여기에는 철도 건설과정이 지니는 특성과 철도 건설 이 전의 도시핵과 도로체계, 도시구역의 구성형태로 대표되는 기존 도시공간질서 등이 복합적 요인으로 작용하고 있다. 특히 철도 건설 주체와 의도, 철도(역)의 입지특성을 반영하여 이루어지는 철도역 주변지역의 개발형태는 기존도시지역과 철도역 주변지역, 그리고 그 사이의 전이지역 이 지니는 지역별 공간질서의 재편양상에 차이를 가져오고 있다. 그리고 그 결과는 후속되는 도시개발 양상이나 도시구역의 확장형태는 물론 도시교통 네트워크의 재편 형태와 도시기능지역구조, 도시축의 재편양상에 이르기까지 모든 방면에 영향을 미치고 있다.
