This study examines how the life of Sang Chun Lee shaped the development of Korean billiards, focusing on institutionalization, internationalization, and cultural transmission. A biographical method was used, supported by triangulation of UMB–BWA–USBA official records and major Korean newspaper archives. The study finds that Lee’s achievements, including the 1994 BWA World Cup Final win and twelve consecutive USBA titles, established Korea’s international competitiveness. His administrative work contributed to the institutional modernization of the sport, while his activities at Carom Café and the Sang Lee International Open supported its cultural continuity. Lee’s biography illustrates how individual careers illuminate the interaction between sport institutions and cultural change, offering a meaningful model for sports anthropology.

본 연구는 당구 선수 이상천의 생애를 통해 한국 당구의 제도화·국제화·전승(문화화) 과정을 분석하였다. 국내 신문 아카이브와 UMB·BWA·USBA 공식 기록을 중심으로 삼각 교차검증을 실시하여 생 애사 자료의 신뢰성을 확보하였다. 연구 결과, 이상천은 첫째, 1994 BWA World Cup Final 우승, USBA 12연속 우승 등을 통해 한국 당구의 국제 경쟁력을 입증하였고, 둘째, 대한당구연맹 회장 재임 시 국제 규정 도입·리그 정비·육성체계 구축 등 제도화를 강화하였다. 셋째, 미국 Carom Café 활동과 SLIO 창설은 당구의 전승·문화화 기반 형성에 기 여하였다. 결론적으로 그의 생애는 한국 당구가 제도·국제·문화 영역 에서 변화해 온 구조적 맥락을 드러내며, 스포츠인류학 분야에서 개인 생애와 스포츠 제도·문화의 상호작용을 분석하는 연구 모델로서 중요한 의미를 갖는다.
