This study examines changes in genre composition and genre concentration in TV original miniseries produced between 2021 and 2024, a period marking a structural transition and contraction in the Korean drama industry following the production peak in 2022. By comparing original and adapted miniseries, the study investigates how genre strategies were differently formed and adjusted according to production type under shared industrial conditions. The dataset consists of 386 TV miniseries aired on terrestrial broadcasters, comprehensive programming channels, cable channels, and domestic and global OTT platforms, including 244 original miniseries and 142 adapted miniseries. Applying a genre classification system of 52 detailed genres grounded in actual production practices, this study analyzes genre proportions at the mid-level category and examines changes in genre concentration using the Herfindahl–Hirschman Index (HHI). The analysis reveals that TV original miniseries maintained a relatively dispersed genre structure from 2021 to 2023, followed by a marked increase in genre concentration in 2024, when production volume declined and uncertainty intensified. In contrast, adapted miniseries exhibited greater year-to-year volatility in genre concentration, with production converging more rapidly on commercially validated genres during periods of heightened market risk. These patterns suggest that, even within the same contractionary environment, original and adapted miniseries adopted distinct genre strategies to manage uncertainty and production risk, reflecting different temporal logics of strategic response. By moving beyond interpretations of genre concentration as mere homogenization, this study demonstrates that genre strategies during periods of industrial contraction can follow differentiated pathways shaped by production type–specific conditions and constraints. In doing so, it repositions genre not only as a narrative category but also as a strategic industrial variable, offering an analytical framework for understanding how the Korean drama industry recalibrates production risk under structural pressure.

본 연구는 2022년을 정점으로 드라마 제작 편수가 감소 국면에 진입한 2021~2024년을 한국 드라마 산업의 구조적 전환·위축 국면으로 설정하고, 이 시기에 제작된 TV 오리지널 미니시리즈의 장르 구성과 장르 집중 구조의 변화 양상을 분석하였다. 특히 각색 미니시리즈와의 비교를 통해, 동일한 산업 환경 속에서 제작 유형에 따라 장르 전략이 어떠한 방식으로 형성·조정되었는지를 구조적으로 살펴보려고 하였다. 분석 대상은 지상파, 케이블, 종합편성채널, 국내외 OTT 플랫폼에서 제작·방영된 TV 미니시리즈 총 386편으로 오리지널 미니시리즈 244편과 각색 미니시리즈 142편을 포함한다. 본 연구는 52개의 세부 장르 분류 체계를 적용하여 중분류 장르 기준의 제작 비율을 산출하고, 허핀달–허시먼 지수(Herfindahl–Hirschman Index, HHI)를 활용해 장르 집중도의 변화 양상을 계량적으로 분석하였다. 분석 결과, TV 오리지널 미니시리즈는 2021~2023년까지 비교적 분산된 장르 구조를 유지하다가, 제작 편수 감소와 산업 불확실성이 본격화된 2024년에 이르러 장르 집중도가 뚜렷하게 상승하는 양상을 보였다. 반면 각색 미니시리즈는 연도별로 장르 집중도의 변동 폭이 크게 나타나며, 제작 환경 악화 국면에서 단기간에 검증된 장르로 제작이 집중되는 경향을 보였다. 이는 동일한 산업 위축 환경 속에서도 오리지널 미니시리즈와 각색 미니시리즈가 장르 전략을 통해 불확실성과 제작 리스크를 관리하는 방식, 즉 시간적 대응 논리가 상이하게 작동하고 있음을 보여준다. 본 연구는 장르 집중을 단순한 획일화로 해석하는 관점을 넘어, 산업 위축기 속에서 제작 유형별 조건과 제약에 따라 장르 전략이 서로 다른 경로로 형성될 수 있음을 실증적으로 제시한다. 이를 통해 드라마 장르를 미학적 분류가 아닌 산업적 전략 변수로 재위치시키고, 한국 드라마 산업의 구조적 변화와 장르 전략 간의 관계를 이해하기 위한 분석적 틀을 제공한다.
