This paper reports on the existence of metadiscourse markers in modern Korean that explicitly express the degree of conceptual accessibility, and investigates their forms, meanings, and discourse functions. The Korean expressions ‘-man haedo’, ‘-man bwado’ , ‘dangjang’, and ‘(meolli) (-kkaji) gal geotdo eopsi’ are linguistic devices that explicitly indicate that an example or illustration, used by the speaker for explanation or argumentation, is particularly familiar, spatio-temporally close, or easy for the addressee to understand. This paper defines these as metadiscourse markers signaling high conceptual accessibility. Metadiscourse markers indicating high conceptual accessibility serve to attract the addressee's attention and enhance persuasiveness in discourse, increase the argumentative force of explanations and arguments, and dramatically emphasize contrasting objects. Specifically, the function of increasing argumentative force in explanations and arguments is derived from scalar implicature, which originates from a scalar set where objects are enumerated from those with high conceptual accessibility to those with low conceptual accessibility. The marker ‘-man haedo’, which indicates conceptual accessibility, is distinguished from usages that adhere to the principle of compositionality and those indicating a sufficient condition. It is believed to have originally extended from the latter usage to acquire its conceptual accessibility marking function. While ‘-man bwado’ is very similar in usage to ‘-man haedo’, it retains some lexical meaning of ‘bo-’ (see), showing slight differences. ‘dangjang’ has evolved from an original temporal adverb to acquire both a reader involvement marker function and a phrasal explication function. ‘gal geotdo eopsi’ possesses the characteristic of explicitly excluding objects with low conceptual accessibility.

본고는 현대 한국어에서 개념적 접근성의 정도를 명시적으로 표현하는 메타담화 표지 의 존재를 보고하고, 그 형식, 의미, 담화 기능을 탐구하였다. 한국어의 ‘-만 해도’, ‘-만 봐도’, ‘당장’, ‘(멀리) (-까지) 갈 것도 없이’는 화자가 설명이나 논증을 위해 예시나 예화를 들 때 그 예가 화청자에게 각별히 친숙하거나 시공간적으로 가깝거나 이해하기 쉬운 대상 임을 명시적으로 표시해 주는 언어 표현들인데, 이들에 대해 본고에서는 개념적 접근성이 높음을 표시하는 메타담화 표지라고 규정하였다. 개념적 접근성이 높음을 표시하는 메타 담화 표지는 담화에서 청자의 관심을 집중시키고 호소력을 높이는 기능, 설명과 논증에 설득력을 높이는 기능, 대비되는 대상을 극적으로 강조하는 기능을 발휘한다. 특히 설명과 논증에 설득력을 높이는 기능은 개념적 접근성이 높은 대상부터 개념적 접근성이 낮은 대상으로 대상이 열거되어 있는 척도 집합으로부터 도출되는 척도 함축에서 얻어지는 것 이다. 개념적 접근성을 표시하는 ‘-만 해도’는 합성성의 원리를 지키는 용법, 충분조건을 나타내는 용법과 구분되며 기원적으로 충분조건을 나타내는 용법으로부터 확장되어 개념 적 접근성 표시 기능을 획득했다고 생각된다. ‘-만 봐도’는 ‘-만 해도’와 쓰임이 매우 비슷하지만, ‘보-’의 어휘적 의미를 어느 정도 간직하고 있어 약간의 차이를 보인다. ‘당장’은 기원적인 시간 부사에서 독자 참여 표지 기능을 거쳐 어구 해설 기능까지 획득하게 되었 다. ‘(멀리) (-까지) 갈 것도 없이’는 개념적 접근성이 낮은 대상을 명시적으로 배제하는 특성을 갖는다.
