This study examines Okcheon Jo Deuk-rin’s resignation memorials to the throne with particular attention to the textual mechanics expressed through ipŭi (立意, “intentional structuring”) and susa (修辭, “rhetorical articulation”). Here, ipŭi refers to the composite procedures of thematic selection, argumentative calibration, the orchestration of focal lexical nodes, and the strategic foregrounding of pivotal claims. Susa is analyzed across the layers of chabŏp (字法), kubŏp (句 法), and p’yŏnchangbŏp (篇章法), encompassing Jo’s deployment of parallel prose, tonal modulation, and classical allusion. These analytical categories enable us to discern Jo’s discursive positioning, latent motives, and situational logic, while approximating the horizon of expectation held by contemporaneous court readers. Situated in the early reign of King Yeongjo, Jo’s memorials constitute significant documentation of how a re-ascendant Southerner (南人) intellectual negotiated the volatile landscape of tangp’yŏng politics. The texts reveal the dynamics through which Jo was endorsed, attacked, and repeatedly displaced, demonstrating his adept use of parallelism and citation to enhance persuasive force and inscribe the memorials within the stylistic lineage of archaic prose. By correlating lexical and syntactic features with contemporaneous memorials, relevant prose writings, and court records, this study elucidates deeper layers of intentional design and explains the strong reactions these writings elicited both in the court and in later critical assessments. In doing so, it reassesses the memorial to the throne as a medium through which political agency, literary form, and ideological signaling intersect and mutually reinforce one another.

본고는 玉川趙德鄰이 남긴 사직상소문을 개관하고 그 가운데 두 편의 작품을 立意와 修辭의 측면에서 분석했다. ‘立意’는 주제 설정과 논지 수 립, 제재 선정, 핵심어 배치, 관건 부각 등을 포괄하며, ‘修辭’는 字法, 句 法, 篇章法의 각 층위에 해당되는 수사 기법 일반을 가리킨다. 이를 초점 으로 상소문을 살핌으로써 작가의 숨은 의도나 상황 논리, 강조 지점 등 을 포착하고 당대 독자의 시점을 확보할 수 있다. 조덕린의 상소문은 정치사적으로 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 조덕린은 영 조의 즉위와 함께 탕평의 당위를 강조하는 흐름 속에 영남 선비들의 신 망을 발판으로 정계에 다시 진출했다. 그가 어떻게 인정받고 공격당하며 부침하는지, 그 원인과 결과를 보여주는 것이 그의 상소문들이다. 또한 그의 상소문들은 민감한 사안을 다루면서 억양법과 용전법을 통해 설득 력을 높였고 대우법을 능숙하게 구사하여 유장한 文氣와 고문의 품격을 갖추었다. 본고는 핵심어와 구법, 논지 전개의 방식과 특정한 의도를 담은 수사법 등에 대한 분석, 그리고 전후 작품 및 관련 史料들과의 비교를 통하여, 조덕린이 작품의 裏面에서 말하고자 한 진의가 무엇이었는지, 그것이 당대 와 후대에 왜 그렇게 큰 반응으로 이어졌는지를 조명했다. 이를 통해 정치적 행위로서의 상소문이 지니는 의미와 가치를 살피고자 했다.
