Plastic waste constitutes a significant portion of human waste and is a major cause of environmental pollution. Plastic waste has a particularly high adverse impacts on wildlife, with an increasing number of animals dying from plastic waste ingestion. In this report, we document an instance of plastic ingestion by Elaphe dione in Jirisan National Park. At the time of observation, plastic materials were suspended in the mouth of an E. dione individual, and minor abrasions were observed around the mouth. The individual could have mistaken plastic for prey and ingested it. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a snake ingesting plastic in South Korea. This case highlights the impact of plastic waste on wildlife, and underscores the urgent need for effective plastic waste management and increased ecosystem conservation awareness.

플라스틱 폐기물은 인간의 생활 쓰레기 많은 부분을 차지하고 있으며 환경 오염의 주요 원인으로 알려져 있다. 특히 야생동물에게 치명적 인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며 플라스틱 폐기물을 섭식하고 사망하는 사례가 증가하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 지리산국립공원에서 누룩뱀 (Elaphe dione)이 플라스틱(비닐봉지 파편)을 섭식한 사례를 보고하고자 한다. 발견 당시 플라스틱은 누룩뱀의 입에 걸려 있었으며, 입 주변 에 작은 찰과상이 확인되었다. 해당 개체는 플라스틱을 먹이로 오인하여 섭식한 것으로 판단되며 이는 국내에서 최초로 보고된 뱀의 플라스틱 섭식 사례이다. 본 사례는 플라스틱 폐기물이 야생동물에 미치는 영향을 명확히 보여주며, 생태계 보전을 위한 효과적인 플라스틱 폐기물 관리 와 인식 개선이 필요함을 시사한다.
