This study examines the outline and character of Mandang(卍黨), a notorious secret anti-Japanese society during the Japanese colonial period. Mandang was a secret society formed by Buddhist youth, embracing Manhae Han Yong-un’s(만해 한용운) spirit of independence and Buddhist principles, to normalize Buddhist operations, break free from the subjugation of colonial Buddhism, and promote the independence movement. Therefore, maintaining secrecy, obeying party orders, martyrdom, and maintaining national consciousness were crucial. However, because Mandang was a secret society, surviving documentary evidence was scarce. Furthermore, oral testimonies of those involved after the liberation on August 15 were not recorded. Nevertheless, the author has conducted considerable research on Mandang and reported it to the academic community. Furthermore, academic research commensurate with its reputation has been lacking. With this in mind, this article aims to analyze Mandang’s overall outline, character, and limitations. Based on this premise, the author’s key points are as follows. First, I aimed to organize Mandang based on the Six Ha Principles, a perspective that illuminates events and movements. Second, because Mandang was a secret society, objective documentary data is scarce. Therefore, the author sought to collect and utilize diverse sources, including testimonies and memoirs from those involved. Third, I proposed a methodology for Mandang research. This approach emphasizes data collection, comprehensive research on Mandang, case studies, and comparative studies. With these principles in mind, I hope this article will be useful for research on Manhae Han Yong-un, secret societies, the Buddhist youth movement, Dasolsa Temple, and the Central Buddhist Canon. Any shortcomings will be addressed through ongoing research.

본 고찰은 일제하 항일 비밀결사체로 유명한 만당(卍黨)의 개요와 성격 을 다룬 글이다. 만당은 만해 한용운의 독립정신과 불교정신을 추종하는 불교청년들이 불교 운영의 정상화, 식민지 불교의 예속에서 탈피, 독립운 동을 추진하기 위해 만든 비밀 결사체이었다. 때문에 비밀 유지, 당의 명 령 복종, 순교, 민족의식의 유지 등이 관건이었다. 그런데 만당은 비밀 결 사체이었기에 전하는 문헌 자료가 부족하였다. 그리고 8·15 해방 이후 관 련자들에 대한 구술 증언도 채록되지 않았다. 그럼에도 불구하고 필자는 만당에 대해서 그간 적지 않은 연구를 추진 하여 학계에 보고하였다. 그러나 그 명성에 걸맞는 학계 차원에서의 연구 는 수행되지 않았다. 이런 점을 유의하여 필자는 이 글에서 만당의 전체적 인 개요, 성격, 한계 등을 집중적으로 분석하고자 하였다. 이런 전제에서 필자가 유의한 초점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 사건 및 운동을 조명하는 관점인 6하원칙에 의거하여 만당을 정리 하고자 하였다. 둘째, 만당은 비밀 결사체이었기에 객관적인 문헌 자료가 빈약하다. 그 래서 필자는 관련 자의 증언, 회고록 등을 다양하게 수집하여 활용하고자 하였다. 셋째, 만당 연구를 위한 방법을 제시하였다. 그는 자료수집의 강조, 만당 에 대한 종합적인 연구, 사례 연구, 비교 연구 등이다. 이상과 같은 취지에서 서술한 이 글이 만해 한용운, 비밀결사, 불교청년 운동, 다솔사, 중앙불전 등의 연구에 활용되길 기대한다. 미진한 측면은 지 속적인 연구로 보완할 것이다.
