Kim tae-heup(1894~1989), born in the late Joseon Dynasty and a lifelong leader in the spread of Buddhism, was the first missionary appointed by the religious order and a pioneer in the spread of Buddhism through written and broadcast media. The main theme of this academic conference is a reexamination of the thought of Kim tae-heup. Divided into five themes, this conference attempts to analyze the life of Shakyamuni Buddha, the belief in Avalokitesvara, view of sutras, view of Zen Buddhism, and doctrine of propagation. Each theme, like warp and woof, subdivides the core of Kim tae-heup’s thought into its specific details. Accordingly, the theme of this paper is to discuss the belief in Avalokitesvara from three perspectives. First, by examining the articles contributed by Kim tae-heup to 『Daehan Buddhism』, Buddhist newspaper, I will trace the correlation between the publication of the 『觀音經講話』, focusing on writings on life and faith. Second, I will compare and analyze the 『觀音經講話』 and 『새觀音經講話』, which represent Kim tae-heup’s the belief in Avalokitesvara, and examine the trends and characteristics of their structural changes. In this way, I will evaluate the influence of Kim tae-heup’s 『새觀音經講話』 on the religious practice of Buddhists in the history of Korean Buddhism today. And finally, by analyzing the records of the spiritual experiences of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva included in 『Daehan Buddhism』 and 『Collection of Great Master Daeun Daejongsa munjip(大隱大宗師集)』, I aim to reexamine the influence of the spread and education of the Avalokitesvara faith. This paper allows us to draw the following conclusions. Through his contributions to 『Daehan Buddhism』, Buddhist newspaper, and the Collection of Great Master Daeun Daejongsa munjip, Kim tae-heup emphasized a proper outlook on life and faith to Buddhists. He also contributed to the spread of the Avalokitesvara faith by interpreting the records of the spiritual experiences of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. Furthermore, through his translation and publication of the Gwaneumgyeongganghwa and Sae Gwaneumgyeongganghwa, he made the previously difficult Chinese scriptures more accessible to the general public. The value of Kim tae-heup’s documentary propagation holds profound significance in modern Korean Buddhism.

조선 후기에 태어나 평생 전법(傳法)의 최일선에 있던 김태흡(金泰洽, 1894~1989)은 교단에서 임명한 최초의 포교사(布敎師)이자, 문서 및 방송 포교에 앞장섰던 인물이었다. 본 학술대회의 대주제는 김태흡 사상의 재조명이다. 이를 다섯 가지 주제로 나누어 석존(釋尊)의 생애(生涯), 관음신앙(觀音信仰), 경전관(經典觀), 선종관(禪宗觀), 그리고 포교론(布敎論)에 대한 분석을 시도하고 있다. 각각의 주제는 씨줄과 날줄처럼 김태흡 사상의 얼개로 그의 사상을 세분화하고 있다. 이에 본 논문의 주제는 관음신앙을 세 가지 관점에서 논의하고자 한다. 첫째, 김태흡이 『대한불교(大韓佛敎)』에 기고한 기사(記事)를 고찰하여 인생과 신앙에 관한 글을 중심으로 『관음경강화(觀音經講話)』 발간에 관한 상관성(相關性)을 추적한다. 둘째, 김태흡의 관음신앙을 대변하는 『觀音經講話』와 『새觀音經講話』를 비교 분석하여 그 구성 변화의 추이 및 특징을 고찰하여 오늘날 한국 불교사에서 김태흡의 『새觀音經講話』가 불자들의 신행(信行)에 미친 영향을 평가하고자 한다. 그리고 마지막으로 『대한불교』와 『대은대종사문집(大隱大宗師文集)』에 수록된 관세음보살(觀世音菩薩) 영험록(靈驗錄)을 분석하여 관음신앙의 유포(流布) 및 교화(敎化)에 미친 영향을 재조명하고자 한다. 본 논문을 통하여 다음과 같은 결론을 도출할 수 있었다. 김태흡은 『대한불교』와 『대은대종사문집』에 기고한 글을 통하여 불자들에게 바른 인생관과 신앙관을 강조하였으며, ｢관음영험록｣을 풀이하여 관음신앙의 유포에 일조하였다. 또한 『觀音經講話』와 『새觀音經講話󰡕의 역주 및 발간을 통하여 어렵게만 느껴지던 한문경전이 대중들에게 쉽게 다가갈 수 았는 계기를 마련하였다. 근대불교에서 김태흡의 문서포교의 가치는 매우 중요한 의미를 갖는다.
