This study critically examines the structure and characteristics of the Buddha Biography as presented in The Collected Writings of Da-eun Great Master, Volume 1, with particular focus on the section titled “A Brief Biography of Śākyamuni Buddha.” The paper compares this text with other traditional Buddha biographies to highlight its unique narrative structure and Da-eun’s position on the chronology of the Buddha’s life and death. It explores how Da-eun synthesized modern Buddhist scholarship from Japan and the West to reconstruct the life of Gautama Buddha, aiming to revitalize Korean Buddhism during the colonial period through effective missionary outreach. Key features such as his emphasis on mind-to-mind transmission (isipseonshim), detailed discussion of meditation practices, and his interpretation of sūkara-maddava as a type of mushroom (rather than pork) underscore Da-eun’s distinct Buddhist perspective. This study situates Da-eun’s work within the broader development of modern Buddhist scholarship in Korea and highlights its historical and academic significance.

이 논문은 『대은대종사문집』 제1권에 수록된 ‘석가여래 약전’을 중심으로 대은 대종사가 기술한 불타전의 구성과 특징을 비판적으로 고찰한 것이다. 기존의 불타전과 비교하여 본 문헌이 갖는 독자적 구성 방식과 불멸연대에 대한 대은의 입장을 분석하였으며, 특히 연령과 사건의 배열을 중심으로 당시 불교학계의 연구 경향이 어떻게 반영되었는지를 살펴보았다. 대은 대종사는 일본과 서구에서 도입된 근대적 불교학을 바탕으로 고타마 붓다의 생애를 재구성하였으며, 이를 통해 조선불교의 포교와 부흥을 도모하고자 하는 강한 의지를 보여준다. 또한 ‘이심전심’의 강조, 수행론에 대한 상세한 기술, 수카라 맛다바에 대한 명확한 해석 등은 대은의 독자적 불교관을 보여주는 중요한 지점이다. 본 연구는 초기 한국 불교학의 형성과정 속에서 대은 대종사의 불타전이 갖는 의의와 학문사적 가치를 조명하고자 한다.
