This study aims to deeply explore the dynamic mechanisms of adaptation and identity transformation experienced by Chinese graduate students majoring in education while completing their degree programs at a local Korean national university. While previous research on international students has primarily focused on the outcomes of acculturation or psychological challenges, this study, taking into account the specificity of the academic discipline and the context of the degree program, sought to reconceptualize adaptation beyond mere cultural adjustment to a transformative learning process that encompasses a shift in academic paradigms. To this end, the grounded theory methodology of Strauss & Corbin was applied for analysis. Participants were 21 Chinese international students enrolled in a doctoral program in education at a national university in Busan. Data were collected through in-depth interviews based on Berry's acculturation model and Mezirow's transformative learning theory. The central phenomenon identified as "academic growth and identity reconstruction through boundary crossing" was identified. This process was analyzed as a process that led to academic and personal growth and expanded career prospects (outcome) through language, academics, culture, and identity maintenance strategies (action/interaction) under the influence of structural constraints of Chinese doctoral programs (causal conditions), differences in Korean and Chinese educational cultures (contextual conditions), and personal resources and social support (mediating conditions). This study demonstrates that the adaptation process of Chinese international students goes beyond simple cultural adaptation and is a transformative learning process that involves a shift in academic paradigm and identity reconstruction, providing important implications for the internationalization of Korean universities and cooperation in higher education in Asia.

본 연구는 중국 교육학 전공 대학원생들이 한국의 지방 국립대학에서 학위과정을 이수하는 과정에서 경험하는 적응 과정과 정체성 변화의 역동적 메커니즘을 심층적으로 탐색하는데 목적이 있다. 기존의 유학생 연구가 주로 문화적응의 결과나 심리적 어려움 에 초점을 맞춘데 반해, 본 연구는 학문 분야 특수성과 학위 과정의 맥락을 고려하여 적응 을 단순한 문화 적응을 넘어 학문적 패러다임의 전환까지 수반하는 변혁적 학습과정의 재개념화하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 Strauss & Corbin의 근거이론 방법론을 적용하여 분 석하였다. 연구 참여자는 P 지역의 국립대학교 교육학 박사과정에 재학 중인 중국인 유 학생 21명이며, Berry의 문화적응 모델과 Mezirow의 변혁적 학습이론에 기반한 심층면 담을 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 연구 결과, 참여자들이 경험하는 중심 현상은 경계 넘기를 통한 학문적 성장과 정체성 재구성’으로 도출되었다. 이는 중국 박사과정의 구조적 제약 (높은 경쟁률 등)이라는 인과적 조건, 한중 교육문화의 차이(위계적 vs. 토론 중심)라는 맥락적 조건, 그리고 개인적 자원 및 사회적 지원(교수 멘토링, 동료 네트워크)이라는 중 재적 조건의 영향 하에 이루어졌다. 이들은 언어 학습, 학업 전략, 문화 적응, 정체성 유지 등 다양한 작용/상호작용 전략을 구사하여 궁극적으로 비판적 사고, 독립적 연구 역량 증 진 등의 학문적 성장과 자기효능감 증진, 진로 전망 확장이라는 결과에 도달하였다. 선택 코딩 결과, ‘경계 넘기를 통한 변혁적 성장’이 핵심 범주로 규명되었으며, 이는 변혁적 학 습의 4단계(낯선 만남과 혼란 → 적응 노력과 시행착오 → 전환점과 깨달음 → 통합과 성장)를 통해 ‘문화적 경계인’으로서의 새로운 정체성을 구성하는 과정이었다. 본 연구는 유학생의 적응을 단순한 문화적응을 넘어 학문적 패러다임의 전환까지 수반하는 역동적 인 변혁적 학습 과정으로 재개념화했다는 학술적 의의를 갖는다. 결론적으로, 한국 대학 은 전공별 학술 한국어 및 글쓰기 프로그램, 한중 비교교육 관점의 교육과정을 도입하고, 지방 국립대학교에 대한 국제화 지원을 확대하는 등 실질적인 정책적 시사점을 제공한다.
