The Corinthian church was divided into several factions due to incorrect self-introductions and identity constructions such as, "I belong to Paul." They boasted in their own affiliations and displayed arrogance toward others. Also those who considered themselves wise regarded Christ and his crucifixion as a stumbling block and instead exalted worldly wisdom. These misguided attitudes produced division and an identity crisis within the community. In response, Paul emphasizes both the equality and the distinct roles of ministers, correcting the Corinthians’ misunderstandings of ministry. He further underscores that the distinctiveness of his own ministry lies in laying Christ as the foundation of the church. Employing the imagery of a building and a field, Paul presents the Corinthian church as a unique community with a new identity—“God’s house,” “God’s temple,” and “God’s field”—built upon Christ. On this basis, he exhorts them to overcome factionalism and to pursue unity of heart and mind, following the example of the early ministers who, though differing in function, worked together in cooperation.

고린도교회는 “나는 바울에게 속했다”와 같은 잘못된 자기소개와 정체성 구성으로 인해 여러개의 파당으로 분열되어 있었다. 그들은 자신이 속한 그룹의 리더십을 자랑하고, 다른 그룹에 대해서는 교만한 태도를 취 했다. 더 나아가 고린도교회의 “지혜로운 자”는 예수 그리스도와 그의 십 자가에 못 박히심을 걸림돌로 여기고, 바울이 전한 복음 대신 ‘이 세상의 지혜’를 주장했다. 이러한 각 그룹의 행동양식과 잘못된 정체성 주장은 고 린도교회의 분열과 정체성 위기를 초래했다. 이에 바울은 고린도교인들의 사역자들에 대한 오해를 바로잡기 위해, 사역자들의 동등성과 역할의 차 이를 강조한다. 더 나아가 바울은 자기 사역의 특별함은 예수 그리스도를 고린도교회의 터로 놓은 것에 있다고 주장한다. 그리고 바울은 이러한 건 물 이미지와 밭 이미지를 사용하여 고린도교회는 예수 그리스도 터 위에 세워진 ‘하나님의 집’, ‘하나님의 성전’, ‘하나님의 밭’이라는 특별하고 새로 운 정체성을 가진 공동체라고 말한다. 바울은 고린도교회가 이러한 새로 운 정체성 구성을 통해, 역할은 달랐지만 고린도교회를 세우기 위해 협력 했던 초기 사역자들처럼, 한 마음과 한뜻으로 화합하는 공동체가 되라고 권면한다.
