Female Return Narratives and Affective Devices in the Era of Regional Depopulation ─ Focusing on The Tsubaki Stationery Store ─
This study examines Ito Ogawa’s The Tsubaki Stationery Store to show how its narrative of female homecoming and community restoration, often read as a healing story, also exposes the the structural fragility of local communities in an era of regional depopulation. Poppo’s return is interpreted not only as personal recovery but as an effort to reconstruct identity within a shrinking society. Depictions of elderly residents and fragmented households highlight demographic decline and weakened social networks. The practice of letter ghostwriting functions as emotional labor that sustains communal memory, while revealing how relational deficits are displaced onto individual affective work. Kamakura, portrayed as rich in cultural resources, embodies both local identity and the challenge of sustaining regional appeal. Thus, the novel is re-evaluated as a site of literary imagination that emotionally reorganizes communal survival in the age of regional extinction.
