This study investigated the reality of secondary traumatization that professional rescuers, including firefighters, police officers, emergency medical technicians, and disaster medical personnel, experience due to repeated exposure to psychologically traumatic events, and explored psychological intervention strategies to tackle the trauma. Korean professional rescuers are secondary exposed to psychologically traumatic events while they rescue primary victims; the psychological trauma they experience receives little social and institutional recognition. Secondary traumatization is a psychological phenomenon rising from continued exposure to traumatic experiences that happens to others: it can lead to a myriad of undesirable ramifications, including not only symptoms like post-traumatic stress disorder, but also the collapse of self and worldview, emotional disorders, various addictions, use of drugs, and self-destructive behaviors. This study discussed the occupational factors contributing to secondary traumatization experienced by professional rescuers, resources for coping, and the potential of post-traumatic growth. What is noteworthy is that Germany's psychosocial emergency support system provides integrated assistance including secondary traumatization prevention, on-site intervention, post-incident management, and organizational culture improvement; the support system includes professional rescuers alongside victims as official recipients of support and implements psychological assistance. Such a case study on German system may serve as primary data for research, institutional foundation, and policy development in Korea to enhance the mental health and job sustainability of professional rescuers.

본 연구는 소방관, 경찰관, 구급대원, 재난의료 종사자 등 구조전문인력이 반복적으로 심리외상적 사건에 노출됨으로써 발생하는 간접외상의 실태를 고찰하고, 이에 대한 심리적 개입 방안을 탐색하였다. 한국의 구조전문인력은 일차적 피해자를 지원하는 과정에서 심리외상적 사건에 간접적으로 노출되지만, 그들이 겪는 심리적 고통은 사회적, 제도적으로 충분한 인정을 받지 못하고 있다. 간접외상은 타인의 트라우마 경험에 지속적으로 노출되며 발생하는 심리적 현상으로, 외상 후 스트레스와 같은 증상뿐만 아니라 자아와 세계관의 붕괴, 정서장애, 각종 중독, 약물복용, 자기파괴적 행동 등 광범위한 영향을 초래할 수 있다. 본 연구는 구조전문인력이 겪는 직무적 간접외상 요인과 방어 자원, 나아가 외상 후 성장의 가능성을 함께 논의하였다. 특히 독일의 심리사회적 응급지원체계는 간접외상을 예방, 현장개입, 사후관리, 조직문화 개선으로 이어지는 통합적 지원을 제공하며, 구조전문인력을 피해자와 더불어 공식적인 지원 대상으로 포함하고 심리지원을 실행하고 있다는 점에서 시사하는 바가 크다. 이러한 독일의 사례는 한국에서 구조전문인력의 정신건강 증진과 직무 지속가능성을 높이기 위한 연구, 제도적 기반과 정책수립에 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.
