The purpose of this study is to elucidate the signification of 'the wall' as visually represented on picture book cover designs through a semiotic analysis. As a physical structure, 'the wall' functions to provide protection and safety; however, metaphorically, it possesses an ambivalent attribute, mostly carrying negative connotations (e.g., disconnection, separation, barrier, boundary). To confirm the signification of the wall expressed in picture books, this study analyzed the cover images of eight popular picture books from domestic online bookstores that included 'Wall' in their titles. The methodological approach involved a two-stage, complementary analysis. The first stage employed Peirce's Semiotics to explain the structure of signs and the principles of meaning production. The second stage utilized Barthes' Semiotics to reveal how signs are socially reconfigured. Consequently, the study confirmed that 'the wall' depicted on the picture book covers transcends a simple physical barrier, inducing diverse significations and forming myths for the reader. Examining the wall's ambivalent attributes, the positive aspects were portrayed as protection and safety, while the negative aspects directly reflected common metaphorical attributes such as disconnection, separation, and boundary. Furthermore, numerous attempts were found to move beyond this dichotomous framework, attempting to deliver a specific message or induce a shift in perspective, thereby making the wall function as an object of overcoming. In the picture book cover designs, 'the wall' carried symbolic meanings extending beyond its physical function, forming myths about specific values within a social and cultural context. This then transferred into educational value, confirming that the meaning of 'the wall' is used as a means to emphasize individuality, freedom, challenge and solidarity, optimism, and the expansion of perception.

본 연구는 그림책 표지 디자인에 표현된 ‘벽’의 시각 적 재현을 기호학적으로 분석하여 그 의미작용을 밝히 는 것에 그 목적이 있다. ‘벽’은 물리적 구조물로서 보 호, 안전 등의 기능을 하지만, 은유적으로는 대부분 부 정적 의미(단절, 분리, 장애물, 경계 등)를 내포하는 양 가적 속성을 갖는다. 이에 본 연구는 그림책에 표현된 벽의 의미작용을 확인하기 위해 국내 온라인 서점 인기 순위 상위에 있으며, 제목에 ‘벽’이 들어간 그림책 8권 의 표지 이미지를 분석하였다. 분석 방법론으로는 기호의 구조와 의미 생산 원리를 설명하는 퍼스(Peirce)의 기호학을 1차 분석으로, 기호 가 사회적으로 어떻게 재구성되는지를 밝히는 바르트 (Barthes)의 기호학을 2차 분석으로 활용해 두 이론을 상호보완적으로 적용했다. 결과적으로 그림책 표지에 나타난 ‘벽’은 단순한 물 리적 장벽을 넘어 독자에게 다양한 의미작용을 유도하 고 신화를 형성하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 벽의 양 가적 속성을 살펴보면, 긍정적 측면은 보호나 안전 등 으로 묘사되었으며 부정적으로는 단절, 분리, 경계 등 일반적인 은유적 속성이 그대로 표현되고 있었다. 다만 이분법적 틀을 넘어 메시지 전달을 시도하거나 관점의 전환을 유도하며 벽을 극복의 대상으로 기능하게 하는 시도가 다수 발견되었다. 또한 그림책 표지 디자인에서 ‘벽’은 물리적 기능을 넘어선 상징적 의미를 담고 있었 으며 사회적, 문화적 맥락에서 특정 가치에 대한 신화 를 형성하고 있었다. 이는 곧 교육적 가치로 이전되어 개성이나 자유, 도전과 연대, 낙관주의나 인식의 확장 을 강조하는 수단으로 ‘벽’의 의미가 사용되고 있음을 확인하였다.
