This study examines the historical and cultural resources of the Bukseong-ro area in Daegu, which were reorganized during the period of Japanese invasion and colonial rule. Existing research has been limited to specific topics and subjects from the perspectives of urban regeneration projects and tourism, and has shown limitations in verifying and interpreting historical facts. Using newspaper articles and archival materials, this research investigates industries and historical and cultural resources associated with the everyday lives of residents in the Bukseong-ro area. This study examines the nature of public pawnshops operated under Japanese colonial rule and the historical and cultural significance of private pawnshops. It also explores the historical transformation of the handmade shoe industry, which was a representative local industry, and the formation process of handmade shoe streets. In the Seomun-ro area, the study identifies the historical and cultural significance of Muyoungdang, a prominent department store, in relation to changes in Korean commercial districts during the modern and contemporary periods. In Hyangchon-dong, it analyzes transformations in the food service industry and the cultural phenomena embedded within them. Through an investigation of the historical and cultural resources of Daean-dong, the study reveals changes in religious facilities associated with Japanese colonial rule as well as the living conditions of the urban poor in the post-liberation period. The historical and cultural resources identified in the Bukseong-ro area through this study can strengthen the area’s local identity and serve as valuable resources for urban regeneration initiatives, as well as for enhancing the content of the “Modern Alley Tour” as a tourism asset.

본 연구는 일제 침략과 지배과정에서 재편되었던 대구 북성로 일대의 역사 문화자원에 대한 연구이다. 기존 연구 성과가 도시재생사업과 관광의 관점에서 특정 주제와 대상에 한정되어 있고, 역사적인 사실에 대한 고증과 해석에 한계가 있다고 생각하고 이에 대한 문제점을 제시하였다. 그리고 신문기사와 문헌자료를 통해 북성로 일대 주민의 삶과 관련된 산업과 마을이 가진 역사문화자원을 조사하였다. 일제에 의해 운영되었던 공익전당포의 실체와 사설전당포가 가진 역사 문화적인 내용을 살펴보았으며, 지역의 대표적인 산업이었던 수제화산업의 역사적 변천과정과 수제화골목의 형성과정을 고찰하였다. 서문로지역에서는 근현대시기 조선인 상권의 변화와 함께 대표적인 백화점이었던 무영당이 가진 역사문화적인 의미를 파악하였으며, 향촌동에서는 요식업의 변화와 그에 담긴 문화현상을 규명하였다. 대안동이 가진 역사문화자원에 대한 조사를 통해 일제의 식민지배와 관련된 종교시설의 변화과정과 해방 이후 그와 관련된 도시빈민의 생활 모습을 확인할 수 있 었다. 본 연구를 통해 확인된 북성로 일대의 역사문화자원은 해당 지역의 정체성을 강화하고, 이를 매개로 도시재생의 방안과 관광자원인 ‘근대골목투어’의 내용 을 보완하는 자원으로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.
