This study points out the limitations of the directorial approach that has produced aesthetic fatigue among audiences, as the realism-oriented aesthetics of Pixar and Disney became the mainstream with the growth of the 3D animation industry in the mid-1990s. Within this context, Sony Pictures Animation proposed a new paradigm by introducing experimental and hybrid aesthetics through Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023). In line with this trend, this study selects K-pop Demon Hunters (hereafter KDH) (2025), an animation released by Sony, as the primary case for analysis. KDH achieved remarkable commercial success recording a 97% freshness score on Rotten Tomatoes and reaching No.1 on the U.S. Billboard charts with its main OST “Golden” and holds academic value as an animated film that introduced “Koreanism” by combining K-pop culture with traditional Korean cultural elements. Accordingly, this paper analyzes how the postmodernism aesthetic characteristics observed in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse were implemented in KDH and how these elements contributed to the film’s success. The analytical method proceeds as follows: First, it examines the concept of 3D animation and the developmental process of the industry. Second, it establishes a theoretical framework by comparing and contrasting the postmodern characteristics presented by Kim Wook-dong, I. Hassan, and F. Jameson. Third, it reviews and analyzes previous studies on postmodern animation cases from Sony Pictures Animation. In conclusion, this qualitative study conducts an in-depth analysis of the postmodern characteristics embodied in KDH and explores how its experimental and hybrid aesthetics are reproduced as new directorial strategies.

본 연구는 1990년대 중반 3D 애니메이션 산업이 성장함에 따라 픽사와 디즈니의 리얼리티 중심 미학이 주류가 되며, 관객의 심미적 피로감을 초래한 연출방식의 한계를 지적한다. 이러한 배경에서 Sony Pictures Animation은 <스파이더맨: 뉴 유니버스> (2018)와 <스파이더맨: 어크로스 더 유니버스> (2023)를 통해 실험적· 혼합적 미학을 도입하며 새로운 패러다임을 제시하였다. 본 연구는 소니 제작사에서 개봉한 애니메이션 <케이팝 데몬 헌터스: 이하 케데헌> (2025)을 사례로 선정 하였다. <케데헌>은 로튼 토마토 신선도 97%, 메인 OST인 ‘Golden’의 미국 빌보드 차트 1위 등 놀라운 흥행을 기록하고 있으며, 이는 K-팝 문화와 한국 전통문화 를 결합해 ‘코리아니즘(Koreanism)’을 알린 애니메이션 영화로 학술적 가치를 지니기 때문이다. 본 연구는 <스파이더맨: 어크로스 더 유니버스>에서 나타난 포스트 모더니즘(Postmodernism) 미학적 특성이 <케데헌>에서 어떻게 구현되어 작품의 흥행을 견인했는지 분석하였다. 분석 방법은 첫째, 3D 애니메이션의 개념과 산업 의 발전과정을 고찰하였다. 둘째, 김욱동, 이합 핫산(I. Hassan), 프레드릭 제임슨(F. Jameson)이 제시한 포스트모던 특성을 비교·대조하며 이론적 틀을 정립하였 다. 셋째, Sony Pictures Animation의 포스트모던 애니메이션 사례를 선행연구 중심으로 정리·분석하였다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 질적 연구로 <케데헌>에 구현된 포스트모던 특성을 심층적으로 분석하며, 실험적·혼합적 미학이 어떻게 새로운 연출 방식으로 재현되는지 살펴보고자 한다.
