During this time, discussions on Saseol-sijo have been conducted from various perspectives, and in particular, research comparing them to Pyeongsijo has consistently been produced, focusing on the genre's form, the social class of its practitioners, and the artistic world of individual works. Among them, different opinions have been presented regarding the origin and formation of the branch, and here, while summarizing the results of previous research, we aim to provide a starting point for discussions on the formation of Saseol-sijo. By the active participation of a new class of contributors in the early Choseon period's Sijo literary scene, which had been primarily dominated by the Sadaebu class, the discussion led to the observation that Saseol-sijo were actively created and circulated in the later Choseon period. Contrary to this common theory, there has also been a claim that Saseol-sijo did not develop as a variation of Pyeogsijo, but was a separate genre distinct from Sijo. It was argued that Saseol-sijo did not derive from the traditional Pyeongsijo in terms of content or form, but existed independently and autonomously from long ago. A recent study on 'Manhoingcheongryu' from emphasizes that 'Manhoingcheongryu' which clearly reveals the formation process of Saseol-sijo, has origins different from those of traditional Pyeongsijo. Various claims have been made regarding the origins of Saseol-sijo, but to date, there is no established theory with clear evidence, and discussions merely highlight each one's own perspective. In the flow of Sijo poetry, the emergence of saseol-sijo can be seen as a phenomenon that characterizes the late Choseon period. The compiled by Kim Cheontaek is regarded as the earliest surviving Gajip(collection of songs), and it categorizes and records works according to the melodies of Gagok that were performed at the time. After the Sijo poems included in the collection were recorded, they could be arranged in the musical form of Gagok, and this served as an opportunity to create new melodies for Gagok, thereby promoting musical differentiation. If we trace the logic behind including 'Manhoingcheongryu' in and explore its meaning in detail, it is expected that we can reconstruct the characteristics of the early period of private Sijo formation.

사설시조에 대한 논의는 다양한 주제로 진행되었으며, 특히 갈래의 형식과 담당층 그리 고 개별 작품의 작품 세계 등에 관한 연구 성과들이 꾸준하게 제출되었다. 사설시조의 기원과 형성에 관해서는 서로 다른 의견이 제기된 바 있는데, 여기에서는 기존의 연구 성과를 정리하면서 사설시조의 형성에 대한 논의의 단서를 마련하고자 한다. 조선 전기에 는 사대부 계층에 의해 주도되었던 시조 문학사의 전개 과정에서 새로운 담당층이 참여함으 로써, 사설시조가 조선 후기에 활발하게 창작되고 유통되었다는 논의로 이어졌다. 이러한 통설과는 달리 사설시조가 평시조의 변형으로 형성된 것이 아니라, 시조와는 다른 별도의 갈래였다는 주장이 제기되기도 했다. 사설시조가 그 내용이나 형식의 측면에 서 기존의 평시조에서 파생된 것이 아니라 오래전부터 ‘독립 독행적’으로 존재하던 양식이 라고 주장하였다. 최근 <청구영언>의 ‘만횡청류’를 대상으로 한 연구에서는 사설시조의 형성 과정을 잘 드러내고 있는 ‘만횡청류’가 기존의 평시조와는 다른 연원을 지녔음을 강조하고 있다. 사설시조의 연원에 대해서도 다양한 주장들이 제기되었지만, 현재까지 뚜렷한 근거를 지닌 정설이 없이 단지 각자의 입장을 부각한 논의만이 나열되고 있을 따름이다. 시조사의 흐름에서 사설시조의 등장은 조선 후기의 특징적인 면모로 평가될 수 있는 현상이다. 사설시조의 연원에 대해서도 다양한 주장들이 제기되었지만, 현재까지 뚜렷한 근거를 지닌 정설이 없이 단지 각자의 입장을 부각한 논의만이 나열되고 있을 따름이다. 김천택이 편찬한 <청구영언>은 현전하는 최초의 가집으로 평가되고 있으며, 당시에 연행되 던 가곡창의 곡조로 작품을 분류하여 수록하고 있다. <청구영언>이라는 가집에 수록된 이후 사설시조 작품들이 가곡의 음악 형식으로 편제될 수 있었으며, 이를 계기로 가곡창의 새로운 곡조를 파생시키면서 음악적 분화를 촉진하는 역할을 하였다. <청구영언>에 ‘만횡 청류’를 수록한 논리를 추적하여 그 의미를 세밀하게 탐색한다면, 이를 통해 사설시조 형성기의 양상을 재구할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
