This paper conducted a comparative analysis with Lord Raglan, the originator of the research, to critically examine the typology of heroic biographies devised by Kim Yeol-gyu and Cho Dong-il. Raglan aimed to extract 22 narrative patterns from myths featuring traditional heroes and compare them from a ritualistic perspective to clarify differences with real-life heroes. However, Kim Yeol-gyu and Cho Dong-il approached the task by simplifying the narrative patterns to create a universal framework applicable to folktales or heroic narratives as a whole. This attempt led to the dilution and distortion of the hero's essence and characteristics. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate what the patterns of the myths originating the hero signify. Thus, by comparing and examining the narrative patterns devised by the three preceding researchers, it was argued that the heroic myth narrative is established on the basis of a dualistic allegory shaped by order and matter. However, since the patterns of heroic narratives are not confined to myths but vary across eras and genres, it was also necessary to examine changes on a diachronic dimension. Through this, we sought to reveal that the order established by a single hero tends to be retrograde and does not possess an eternal, enduring nature. Furthermore, a hero can only be recognized through collective public endorsement, and its scope is often constrained to the national level. However, this characteristic also distinguishes heroes from saints, who create an innovative order that persists eternally and immortally even after death. The purpose of studying the narrative patterns of heroes ultimately lies in examining the essence and meaning of heroism. Therefore, comparative research among various similar figures is necessary to clarify their relationships.

본고는 김열규와 조동일이 고안한 영웅의 일대기 유형에 대한 비판적 검증을 위해 그 연구의 시원이 되는 로드 라글란(Lord Raglan)의 논문과 비교 작업을 수행하였다. 라글란 은 전통의 영웅이 등장하는 신화로부터 22가지의 서사 패턴을 추출한 뒤 제의적인 관점에 서 실존 영웅과의 차이를 밝히는 데에 목적을 두었다. 그러나 김열규와 조동일은 설화 또는 영웅서사 전반을 포괄하는 보편적인 틀로써 활용하기 위해 서사 패턴을 간략화하는 방향으로 접근했다. 이러한 시도는 영웅의 특성을 희석․ 왜곡하는 문제를 초래하였다. 따라서 영웅신화의 패턴이 의미하는 바가 무엇인지를 究明하는 작업이 필요하다. 고로, 선행 연구자들이 추출한 서사 패턴을 비교․고찰함으로써 질서와 물질이 빚어내는 이원론 적 알레고리를 근간으로 영웅신화가 성립함을 논하였다. 그러나 영웅서사는 신화에 국한되 지 않고 시대나 장르에 따라 다양하게 변화하므로 통시적인 차원의 변화상에 대해서도 간략히 고찰하였다. 이를 통해 영웅이 수립하는 질서는 복고적인 경향성을 띠고 있으며, 영원히 지속되지도 않는 성향이 있음을 밝혔다. 이처럼 영웅이란 집단의 공인을 받아야만 인정될 수 있으며, 그 외연 또한 종종 국가 단위로 제약되는 양상을 보인다. 그런데 이러한 특성은 사후에도 소멸하지 않고 영원불멸하며, 혁신적인 질서를 창조하는 성인과는 구별되 는 지점이기에 의미가 있다. 영웅의 서사 패턴을 연구하는 목적은 영웅의 본질과 의미를 고찰하는 것에 있으므로, 다양한 유사 인물형 간의 비교연구를 통해 그 관계성을 구명하는 작업이 필요하다.
