This paper discusses the potential for local history to form value as intangible heritage through the process of narrativization, focusing on place name legends related to the fall of Baekje. To this end, it moves beyond the narrativization patterns of mass media, which remain in a figure-centered dichotomous structure. Based on Umberto Eco’s discussion, it analyzes the narrativization method of place name legends—constructed through the interaction of the ‘overcoding of history’ and ‘undercoding of region’—and explains their value as intangible heritage. Place name legends about the fall of Baekje narrativize complex historical events surrounding the downfall by ‘focalizing’ them within the community’s context, and reconnect history with specific places in Chungcheong, such as ‘Hwinyeoch’, ‘Baekchungjae’, and ‘Baekmagang’. Through this, they form value as intangible heritage via the interaction patterns between the field (region) and the text (legend). In conclusion, the place name legends about the fall of Baekje are a narrative practice constantly recreated through the community’s interaction with history, and they perform the core function of intangible heritage by restoring fragmented history into a local identity. This demonstrates how existing historical narratives, which have remained an ‘incomplete heritage’, can be reborn as a community’s ‘intangible heritage’ and provides significant implications for the development of local cultural content.

본고는 백제 패망에 관한 지명 전설을 대상으로 지역의 역사가 서사화 되는 과정에서 무형유산으로서의 가치를 형성할 수 있는 가능성에 대해 논의한다. 이를 위해, 인물 중심의 이분법적 구도에 머무는 대중매체의 서사화 양상을 넘어서, ‘역사의 과대코드화’와 ‘지역의 과소코드화’의 상호작 용을 통해 구성되는 지명 전설의 서사화 방식을 분석한다. 그리고 지역 역사가 서사화되는 과정에서 지명 전설이 나타내는 무형유산적 가치에 대해 설명한다. 백제 패망에 대한 지명 전설은 패망을 둘러싼 복합적인 역사적 사건을 공동체의 맥락에서 ‘초점화’하여 서사화하며 ‘희녀치’, ‘백충 재’, ‘백마강’ 등 충청지역의 구체적 장소와 역사를 재연결시킨다. 이를 통 해 현장(지역)과 텍스트(전설)의 상호작용 양상을 바탕으로 무형유산으로 서의 가치를 형성한다. 결론적으로 백제 패망에 대한 지명 전설은 공동체가 역사와 상호작용 하는 서사적 실천이며, 파편화된 역사를 지역의 정체성으로 회복시키는 무형유산의 핵심적 기능을 수행한다. 이는 ‘미완의 유산’에 머문 기존의 역사 서사가 어떻게 지역 공동체의 ‘무형유산’으로 거듭날 수 있는지 보여 주며, 지역 문화콘텐츠 자원화에도 유의미한 시사점을 제공할 수 있다.
