This study analyzes the process of vegan identity formation among members of the 2030 generation as cultural practitioners, drawing on Taylor’s (1989) concept of identity and Goldsmith’s (2015) notion of triggers. The aim is to elucidate the significance of self-awareness and narrative as the point of departure for identity formation among vegan practitioners and to lay the groundwork for a narrative-based understanding of vegan identity. Employing a narrative inquiry approach, the research was conducted through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and record analysis with 14 vegan practitioners from the 2030 generation. The findings reveal that the transformation of vegan identity unfolds as a narrative process in which internalized self-awareness interacts with various types of vegan triggers. Six distinct trigger types were identified: (1) aspirational, (2) situational, (3) sensory, (4) emotional, (5) personal, and (6) intellectual inquiry. Importantly, these trigger experiences led to substantive and sustained behavioral changes when they resonated with the participants’ accumulated self-awareness. This study contributes a narrative analytical framework for interpreting the transformation of vegan identity within personal and cultural contexts, thereby offering new theoretical and methodological insights for veganism research and educational practice.

본 연구는 문화적 실천자로서 2030세대의 비건 정체성 형성 과정을 테일러 (Taylor, 1989)와 골드스미스(Goldsmith, 2015)의 정체성과 트리거 개념을 통해 분석 했다. 연구의 목적은 비건 실천자들의 정체성 형성의 출발점으로서 자기인식과 내러티브의 중요성을 규명하고, 비건 정체성에 대한 서사적 이해의 토대를 마련하 는 것이다. 연구 방법은 내러티브 연구 방법론에 기초하여 참여관찰과 14명의 2030 세대 비건 실천자를 대상으로 한 심층면담 및 기록 분석을 실시했다. 연구 결과, 비건 정체성 전환은 내면화된 자기인식과 다양한 유형의 비건 트리거(Vegan Trigger)가 상호작용하며 전개되는 서사적 과정임이 확인됐다. 트리거 유형은 ①동 경적 ②상황적 ③감각적 ④감정적 ⑤개인적 ⑥지적 탐구로 나타났으며, 이러한 경험이 각자의 내면에 축적된 자기인식과 맞물릴 때 실질적이고 지속적인 행동 변화로 이어졌다. 본 연구는 비건 실천자의 정체성 전환을 문화적 맥락 속에서 해석하는 서사적 분석 틀을 제시함으로써, 다문화적 관점에서 비거니즘 연구와 환경적 관점에서 실천적 교육이라는 점에 있어 유의미한 시사점을 제공했다는데 의의가 있다.
