Background: While language is the main tool of communication, about 65% of interactions rely on nonverbal behavior, which reflects cultural values and norms. Understanding these behaviors is essential for respecting cultural diversity. Purpose: The purpose of th is study is to compare and analyze the cultural differences in nonverbal behaviors observed in Korean and American communication, with the aim of promoting intercultural understanding and the practice of cultural respect. Through this analysis, the study seeks to foster meaningful interactions among people of different cultural backgrounds and to establish a foundation for harmonious relationships free from misunderstanding. Methodology/Approach: This study, based on the methodological approach of Jerry D. Boucher (1974), sought to conduct an in-depth analysis of how nonverbal expressions are structured and interpreted through emotional display rules, interaction expectations, and social meaning attribution within specific cultural contexts, thereby examining the process by which identical nonverbal behaviors are interpreted differently depending on cultural background. Furthermore, drawing on the classification proposed by John Hinds (1974), nonverbal communication was divided into six categories: tactics, paralanguage, chronemics, kinesics, phatic behavior, and proxemics. Within each category, differences in patterns of expression and meaning as manifested in the cultural contexts of Korea and the United States were compared and analyzed, and these differences were interpreted not in terms of cultural superiority or inferiority, but from a perspective of mutual respect. Findings/Conclusions: The study found that while both Koreans and Americans express emotions nonverbally, they differ in physical contact, tone, time perception, gestures, greetings, and personal space. These differences may cause misunderstanding when cultural backgrounds are not considered, but with cultural respect, they can instead deepen mutual understanding. Implications: Recognizing and respecting cultural differences in nonverbal behavior enhances communication beyond words. Practicing cultural respect allows individuals to interpret diverse expressions with understanding rather than judgment, supporting harmony and cooperation in multicultural societies.

배경: 언어는 인간 의사소통의 핵심 수단이지만, 전체 의사소통의 약 65%는 비언어적 행동으로 이루어진다. 비언어적 표현은 단순한 감정 전달을 넘어, 개인이 속한 사회의 문화적 가치와 규범을 반영한다. 따라서 비언 어적 행동을 이해하는 것은, 타문화를 존중하고 문화적 다양성을 수용하는 첫걸음이 된다. 목적: 본 연구의 목적은 한국인과 미국인의 의사소통에서 나타나는 비언어적 행동의 문화적 차이를 비교·분 석함으로써 상호 문화적 이해와 존중의 실천을 증진하는 데 있다. 이를 통해 서로 다른 문화적 배경을 가진 사람들이 오해 없이 교류하고, 조화로운 관계를 형성할 수 있는 기반을 마련하고자 한다. 방법론/접근 : 본 연구는 Jerry D. Boucher(1974)의 방법론적 접근을 바탕으로, 비언어적 표현이 특정 문화권 에서 어떠한 정서 규칙(display rule), 상호작용 기대(interaction expectation), 사회적 의미 부여(social meaning attribution)로 구성되는지를 함께 고려함으로써, 같은 비언어적 행동이 문화적 배경에 따라 다르게 해석되는 과정을 심층적으로 분석하고자 하였다. 나아가 John Hinds(1974)의 분류를 기반으로 비언어적 의사소통을 전 술(tactics), 준언어적 요소(paralanguage), 시간관념(chronemics), 신체언어(kinesics), 강조적 행위(Emphatic behavior), 공간 행동학(proxemics)의 여섯 범주로 구분하였다. 각 범주에서 한국과 미국의 문화적 맥락에 따 라 나타나는 표현 양상과 의미의 차이를 비교·분석하되, 이를 문화적 우열이 아닌 상호 존중의 관점에서 해 석하였다. 결과/결론 : 한국과 미국은 공통으로 감정을 표현하지만 신체 접촉의 빈도와 의미, 억양과 말의 속도, 시간 개 념, 몸짓의 사용, 인사 방식, 개인 간 거리 등에서 뚜렷한 문화적 차이를 보였다. 이러한 차이는 문화적 배경 을 이해하지 못하면 오해나 불편함을 초래할 수 있으나, 문화 공경의 태도를 바탕으로 접근한다면 오히려 상 호 이해를 깊게 하는 계기가 될 수 있다. 시사점 : 비언어적 행동의 문화적 차이를 인식하고 존중하는 것은 단순한 예절을 넘어, 언어 이상의 의사소통 역량을 향상하는 핵심 요소이다. 타문화의 비언어적 표현 방식을 비판이 아닌 이해의 시선으로 바라보게 하 며, 다문화 사회에서 조화로운 공존과 협력을 가능하게 한다. 따라서 비언어적 소통에서 문화적 다양성을 존 중하는 태도는 글로벌 시민으로서 필수적인 역량이라 할 수 있다.
