This article is an exploratory study that philosophically examines the organizing principles of a collaborative research agenda on the “metamorphosis of modern Korean culture” across three dimensions—concept, metaphor, and method—in order to articulate shared values and to appropriate its network of meanings in an academic sense. To prevent “cultural metamorphosis” from being exhausted as a slogan-like project or an overly loose rhetoric, I argue for a deconstructive intervention that redefines the term’s intensional meaning and reconnects its extension. To that end, I juxtapose usages of metamorphosis in biology, literature, and psychology, and propose the following conditions under which the concept can be sustained in cultural research: (1) the interaction between cultural inertia within a society and the influences exerted by external forces; (2) the scholarly identifiability of an “intermediate process” through which heterogeneous cultural forms are mediated and transformed into something new; and (3) a non-teleological mode of observation that suspends fixed assumptions and pre-given value judgments. The core proposals of this study are as follows. First, rather than using “cultural metamorphosis” merely to symbolize the traits of cultural change within a modern transitional space, I propose three operative values—cultural subjectivity, historical creativity, and present hybridity—so that it may function as a humanities-based analytical tool for structurally grasping transformations in modern Korean culture. Second, I redefine metamorphosis not as a decorative metaphor borrowed from images of biological metamorphosis, but as an epistemological modeling device that links humanistic resources dispersed across disciplines and makes visible the pathways of transformation. Third, building on this redefinition, I propose a methodological scheme termed “puzzle-piece design” to organize collaborative research in a reproducible manner. This approach seeks to extract and arrange elements of concept, metaphor, and method from each research outcome into standardized units, thereby establishing common criteria. Accordingly, the “reconstruction as deconstruction” advanced in this paper does not imply academic monopolization; rather, it aims to specify the conditions for disseminating and refining “cultural metamorphosis” as an analytical framework useful for investigating modernity in Korean studies.

이 글은 ‘근대 한국 문화의 메타모포시스(metamorphosis)’를 탐 색하는 공동연구 아젠다의 구성 원리를 개념·은유·방법이라는 세 차원에서 철학적으로 검토함으로써, 공동가치의 정립을 시도하고 그 의미망을 학술적으로 전유하고자 하는 시론적 연구이다. 필자는 ‘문화 의 메타모포시스’가 표어적 기획이나 방만한 수사로 소모되는 것을 방지하기 위해, 기존 용례의 내포를 재정립하고 외연을 재연결하는 탈구축(deconstruction)의 작업이 필요하다고 주장한다. 이를 위해 생물학·문학·심리학 등에서의 메타모포시스 용법을 대비하면서, 문화 연구에서 이 개념이 성립하기 위한 조건을 다음과 같이 제시한다. 곧, 사회 내부의 문화적 관성과 외부 세력이 주는 영향이 상호작용한 다는 점, 서로 다른 문화적 양상이 매개되어 새로운 것으로 탈바꿈하 는 ‘중간 과정’이 학술적으로 식별 가능해야 한다는 점, 그리고 고정관 념이나 전제된 가치판단을 유보하는 비정향적 관찰이 요청된다는 점 이 그것이다. 본 연구의 핵심 제안은 다음과 같다. 첫째, ‘문화의 메타모포시스’를 근대 전환공간의 문화변동이 가진 특성을 단지 상징화하는 방식으로 사용하는 데 그치지 않고, 근대 한국 문화변동을 구조적으로 포착하는 인문학적 도구로 만들기 위해 문화적 주체성·역사적 창조성·현재 적 혼종성이라는 세 가지 ‘작동 가치’가 필요하다고 제시한다. 둘째, 메타모포시스를 변태 과정의 이미지를 빌린 장식적 은유로 환원하지 않고, 분과적으로 흩어진 인문자원을 연결하며 변용의 경로를 가시화 하는 인식론적 모델링 장치로 재정의한다. 셋째, 이러한 재정의를 바 탕으로 공동연구가 재현 가능한 방식으로 조직되기 위해 ‘퍼즐 조각 디자인’이라는 방법론적 구상을 제안한다. 이는 각 연구 성과에서 개 념·은유·방법의 요소를 표준화된 단위로 추출·배열하여 공통 기 준을 마련하려는 시도이다. 따라서 본 논문이 말하는 ‘해체로서의 재 구성’은 학술적 독점을 뜻하는 것이 아니라, 근대 한국학의 근대성을 탐구하는 데 유용한 분석 틀로서 ‘문화의 메타모포시스’를 확산·정련 하기 위한 조건을 제시하는 데 목적이 있다.
