The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of a horticultural activity program on reducing challenging behaviors in adults with developmental disabilities. The program was implemented twice a week for a total of ten sessions with six participants attending a day activity center in District B, City A. Based on the Motivation Assessment Scale (MAS), individualized preventive strategies were developed according to each participant’s motivational factors, and activities were designed to provide sensory and interest-based stimulation appropriate to their cognitive levels. The results indicated a significant reduction in the frequency of challenging behaviors compared to before program participation. Qualitative analysis showed an average decrease of 1.18 occurrences, and quantitative analysis (paired t-test) also revealed a statistically significant reduction (t = -2.201, p < .05). These findings suggest that understanding the function of challenging behaviors and supporting them through socially acceptable and positive behavioral strategies can effectively enhance social skills and promote vocational rehabilitation potential among individuals with developmental disabilities.

이 연구의 목적은 발달장애인의 도전적 행동 완화에 미치는 원예활동 프로그램의 효과 를 분석하는 데 있다. A시 B구 주간활동센터를 이용하는 발달장애인 6명을 대상으로, MAS로 파악한 개인별 동기에 맞춘 맞춤형 예방 전략과 인지 수준에 적합한 흥미·감각 자극 중심의 원예활동 프 로그램을 주 2회, 총 10회기에 걸쳐 실시하였다. 연구 결과, 프로그램 참여 전보다 도전적 행동 빈도가 유의미하게 감소했으며, 질적 분 석에서는 평균 1.18회 감소, 양적 분석(대응표본 t검정)에서도 통계적으로 유의한 감소 (t=-2.201, p<.05)가 확인되었다. 이러한 결과는 도전적 행동을 단순히 억제하기보다 그 기능을 이해하고 사회적으로 수 용 가능한 방식으로 지원하는 긍정적 행동지원의 실제 적용 사례로서, 발달장애인의 사회 성 향상과 직업 재활 가능성을 시사한다.
