This study examines the ambivalent emotions of expectation and fear ex perienced by humans in the increasingly unpredictable age of AI, reinter preting the philosophical meaning of human emotion and exploring the a esthetic orientation of AI affective design based on Toegye Yi Hwang’s p hilosophy of emotion. Emotion, once regarded as a uniquely human faculty, has now emerged as a central element that AI must learn to understand. As AI technologi es become more actively integrated into society, their outcomes have bec ome increasingly difficult to predict. Humanity, situated between awe an d anxiety toward technology, seeks to comprehend the origins and orient ation of these ambivalent emotions in order to recover human-centered v alues within technological progress. In Toegye’s , the e motional structure that unites nature (性) and emotion (情) under the go vernance of the mind (心) presents emotion as a process of genuine selfunderstanding. Toegye regarded all emotional manifestations as fundame ntally good, clarifying the essential nature of emotion, and argued that emotional distortion arises not from the evil of emotion itself but from a n epistemic error (心不統) in which the mind fails to fulfill its guiding fu nction. This view provides the philosophical foundation for moral judgme nt and right action through the proper governance of the mind. A correct understanding of emotion enables human beings to cultivate so und judgment and moral discernment, thereby realizing human dignity a nd collective well-being. Accordingly, Toegye’s philosophy of emotion offe rs an essential philosophical foundation for understanding the contempor ary relationship between humans and AI.

본 연구는 예측 불가능성이 심화되는 AI시대에 인간이 경험하는 기대감과 두려움이라는 양가감정에 주목하여 인간 감정의 철학적 의미를 재조명하고 퇴계 이황의 감정철학을 바탕으로 AI 감성설계의 미학적 방향을 모색한다. 인간만의 고유한 특성으로 여겨지던 ‘감정’은 이제 인공지능이 이해해야 할 핵심 요소로 부상하고 있으며, AI의 기술이 적극적으로 활용될수록 그 결과를 예측하기는 점점 어려워지고 있다. 인간은 기술에 대한 경이와 불안 속에서 양가적 감정의 근원과 방향성을 이해함으로써 인간 중심의 가치를 회복하고자 한다. 퇴계의 ｢심통성정도｣에서 ‘심(心)’을 중심으로 성(性)과 정(情)을 통합한 감정 구조는 감정을 진정한 자기 이해의 과정으로 제시한다. 퇴계는 모든 감정의 발현을 선한 것으로 감정의 본질을 명확히 하였으며, 감정의 왜곡은 마음이 제 역할을 다하지 못한 ‘심불통(心不統)’ 상태에서 비롯된 인식의 오류임을 밝혔다. 이는 마음의 주재를 통해 올바른 생각과 판단을 실천하는 근거가 된다. 감정의 올바른 이해는 인간이 더 나은 판단과 선택을 내릴 수 있는 능력을 기르고, 인간의 존엄과 공동의 행복을 실현하는 길을 연다. 따라서 퇴계의 감정철학은 오늘날 인간과 AI의 상호관계를 이해하는 데 중요한 철학적 기반을 제공한다.
