This study critically examines the potential and limitations of compassion as a moral emotion, which has been proposed as an alternative to address the pervasive issue of hatred in contemporary society. To this end, it first explores the cognitive dimension of emotion within Martha C. Nussbaum’s theory of emotion ethics, focusing on the ethical significance and social role of compassion as it deepens through cognitive judgment about others. Particular attention is given to Nussbaum’s account, which defines compassion not as a mere emotional reaction but as a moral emotion that involves evaluative judgment. While this perspective represents an important philosophical effort to elevate compassion to the level of public emotion and civic virtue, this paper highlights its internal tensions and structural limitations—namely, The Paradox of Compassion, Emotional Bias, and the Limits of the Cognitivist Framework. In response to these challenges, the paper turns to John Dewey’s ethics as a theoretical foundation for reconstructing emotion ethics. Dewey understands emotion not as the result of fixed judgment, but as a dynamic aspect of lived experience that arises and transforms through relational contexts. Through the concepts of shared experience, practical mutuality, and open-ended morality, Dewey offers a compelling alternative framework to overcome the hierarchical and asymmetrical structure embedded in compassion. Ultimately, this paper does not reject compassion altogether but seeks to open a new horizon of emotion ethics by reconfiguring the relational structures and experiential contexts in which compassion operates. Emotions, rather than being internalized judgments or affective states, are modes of existence that are continuously shaped and reshaped within the shared life with others— thereby grounding morality in an ethics of openness and co-existence.

이 논문의 목적은 현대 사회에 만연한 ‘혐오’ 문제를 해결하기 위한 대안으로 제시된 ‘연민’이 도덕적 감정으로서 어떤 가능성과 한계를 지니는지를 비판적으로 고찰하고, 이를 넘어서기 위한 대안을 모색하는 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 누스바움의 감정 윤리에서 감정의 인지적 차원을 이해하고, 타인에 대한 인지적 판단을 통해 심화되는 ‘연민’의 의미와 사회적 역할을 탐색한다. 특히 마사 누스바움(Martha C. Nussbaum)의 감정 윤리 이론에서 연민이 갖는 도덕적 위상을 분석을 한다. 누스바움은 연민을 단순한 정서 반응이 아니라 인지적 판단을 포함하는 도덕 감정으로 본다. 이러한 관점은 타자의 고통에 대한 윤리적 반응인 연민을 공적 감정으로 끌어올리고자 하는 철학적 시도라는 점 에서 분명한 의의를 지닌다. 그러나 본 논문은 그 개념이 지닌 내적 긴장과 구조적 한계, 즉 ‘연민의 역설’, ‘편향성’, ‘인지 중심 감정론의 한계’를 중심으로 비판적 논의를 전개한다. 이러한 문제의식에서 본 연구는 존 듀이(John Dewey)의 경험주의 윤리학을 감정 윤리의 재구성 방향으 로 제안한다. 듀이에게 감정은 고정된 판단의 결과가 아니라 관계적 삶의 흐름 속에서 생성되고 변형되는 실천의 일부다. 그의 이론은 감정을 공동경험(shared experience), 실천적 상호성(mutuality), 열린 도덕성 (open-ended morality)의 관점에서 재해석함으로써, 감정 윤리에 내재한 시혜성과 비대칭성을 극복할 수 있는 대안적 틀을 제시한다. 결론적으로 본 논문은 연민의 도덕적 불충분성을 비판하면서도, 그것을 전면 적으로 거부하는 대신, 그 감정을 둘러싼 관계적 구조와 경험적 맥락을 재구성함으로써 감정 윤리의 새로 운 지평을 열고자 한다. 감정은 단지 내면의 판단이나 정서가 아니라, 타자와 함께 살아가는 관계 속에서 끊임없이 구성되고 변화하는 존재 방식이며, 그 속에서 도덕성은 비로소 ‘열린 윤리’로서의 의미를 획득할 수 있다.
