The aim of this article is to argue what moral education should aim for in order to promote moral progress. To this end, this article will proceed as follows. First, I will discuss how the nature and types of moral progress should be understood from my ‘naturalistic’ perspective. From a naturalistic perspective that rejects non-natural moral reality and a priori principles, moral progress can be understood as a process of solving moral problems that arise when humans live together as a species. According to this naturalistic perspective, new moral problems may arise in the process of overcoming existing moral problems. Moreover, moral problems reflect various biological and cultural variations. In this regard, I will argue that the process of moral progress, as the process of overcoming moral problems, cannot be characterised by a single principle. Next, I will argue that in order to overcome various moral problems and navigate the path of moral progress, it is necessary to cultivate ‘meta-moral cognition.’ Meta-moral cognition seems to play a decisive role in moral progress because it requires overcoming the biases of existing practices, judgments, and institutions that are implicitly or explicitly understood as reasonable or justified. In particular, I will support this argument by examining anecdotes of historical figures who led representative types of moral progress. Finally, I will present specific moral education methodologies to help students cultivate meta-moral cognition. In order to help students improve their meta-moral cognition, teachers should create an environment where students can freely express and discuss their moral positions and actions. It is also necessary to provide materials for inquiry into actual cases of moral progress and to provide feedback on students’ understanding and positions regarding such cases.

이 논문의 목적은 도덕적 진보의 촉진을 위한 도덕교육이 무엇을 지향해야 하는지에 대한 주장을 펼치 는 것이다. 이를 위해 이 논문은 다음과 같이 전개될 것이다. 먼저 필자의 ‘자연주의적’(naturalistic) 관점 에서 도덕적 진보의 본성과 유형이 어떻게 이해되어야 하는지에 대해서 논할 것이다. 비자연적 도덕적 실 재나 선험적 원리를 거부하는 자연주의적 관점에서, 도덕적 진보는 인간이라는 종(種)이 함께 살아감에 있 어서 발생하는 도덕적 문제를 해결하고 한계를 극복하는 과정으로 이해될 수 있다. 또한 이러한 자연주의 적 관점에 따르면, 기존의 도덕적 문제들을 극복하는 과정에서 새로운 도덕적 문제가 나타날 수 있다. 게 다가 도덕적 문제는 다양한 생물학적ㆍ문화적 변이들을 반영한다. 이러한 측면에서 필자는 도덕적 문제와 그것을 극복하는 과정으로서 도덕적 진보의 과정 역시 단일한 원리의 차원에서 조명되기 어려울 것이라고 주장할 것이다. 다음으로 다양한 차원의 도덕적 문제를 극복함으로써 다원적인 도덕적 진보의 길을 헤쳐 나가기 위해서 는 ‘도덕적 메타인지’(meta-moral cognition)를 함양할 필요가 있음을 주장할 것이다. 도덕적 메타인지는 도덕적 진보에서 결정적 역할을 수행하는 것으로 보이는데, 그것이 당연하거나 정당한 것으로 암묵적 혹 은 명시적으로 이해되는 기존의 관행, 판단, 제도 등의 편향성을 극복하는 것을 요구하기 때문이다. 특히 필자는 도덕적 진보의 대표적 유형들을 이끈 역사적 인물들의 일화를 살펴봄으로써 이러한 주장을 뒷받침 할 것이다. 마지막으로 학생들이 도덕적 메타인지 능력을 함양하는 것을 돕기 위한 구체적인 도덕교육 방 법론을 제시할 것이다. 도덕적 메타인지 향상을 돕기 위해서, 교사는 학생들이 자신의 도덕적 입장과 실제 행위를 자유롭게 개진하고 논할 수 있는 환경을 조성해야 한다. 또한 실제적인 도덕적 진보의 사례에 대 한 탐구 자료를 제공하고 그러한 사례에 대한 학생들의 이해와 입장에 피드백을 제공할 필요가 있다.
