This study investigates the dynamics of a repeated rent-seeking contest for a pure private rent (between two groups). Building on Lee’s (1993) model of a one-shot inter-group contest and using conjectural variations, we develop a model of inter-group contest that incorporates both intra-group cooperation and inter-group rivalry. While the larger group spends less effort on rent seeking than the smaller one in the analysis of Lee (1993), we showed that the larger group can indeed exert more effort than its smaller rival in a repeated contest. However, this outcome is shown to be dependent on the interplay between group size and the degrees of intra-group cooperation and inter-group rivalry. In addition, comparative statics analysis reveals nuanced effects of changes in group size and conjectural variations on equilibrium efforts.

이 연구는 두 집단 간에 순수한 사적 이익을 놓고 벌어지는 ‘반복적인 경합’의 역학을 분석한다. 본 연구는 Lee(1993)의 일회성 집단 간 경합모형을 기반으로 ‘추측된 변화’(conjectural variations)를 활용하여 집단 내 협력과 집단 간 경합 을 모두 포함하는 새로운 집단 간 경합모형을 개발하였다. Lee(1993)의 분석에 서는 큰 집단이 작은 집단보다 이익 추구에 덜 노력하는 것으로 나타났지만, 본 연구는 반복적인 경합 상황에서는 큰 집단이 오히려 더 큰 노력 수준을 기울일 수 있음을 보인다. 이러한 결과는 집단 규모, 집단 내 협력 수준, 집단 간 경쟁 정도 간의 상호작용에 따라 달라진다. 또한, 비교 정태 분석을 통해 집단 규모 와 추측된 변화의 변화가 균형 노력 수준에 미치는 미묘한 영향을 밝혀낸다.
