This study examines the economic activities of Kim Ho-gyeom (1889-1948), a Korean commission merchant (gaekju) in Gunsan during the Japanese colonial period, to elucidate the survival strategies and trajectory of decline of Korean merchants under the colonial wartime regime after the 1930s. Using primary sources including Kim's commercial ledgers (1926-1945), tenant farming rent records (1933-1937, 1940), and checking account records, this research empirically analyzes the concrete business operations of provincial commission merchants. Kim Ho-gyeom began as a small trader in Gunsan in the early 1900s. Responding to the economic crisis of the mid-1920s, he relocated to Napo Township in 1926 and entered the Seopo commission merchant market. After being elected to the township council in 1931 and participating in local administration, he acquired most of the key facilities at Seopo Port in 1932. Simultaneously, he expanded into farm management, operating his own farms while managing estates for absentee landlords. He vertically integrated grain production from farms with commercial activities and operated a moneylending business for tenant farmers. Between 1935 and 1937, he secured loans of approximately 50,000 won at low interest rates (7.3% annually) from institutions including the Industrial Bank, constructing residential and commercial buildings. Through financial arbitrage in moneylending, he achieved returns of 30-50%. In agricultural management, Kim managed the Usong Farm on consignment from 1933, reducing tenant rent rates from 72.4% to 42.7% by 1940. Through "differentiated plot-by-plot adjustments" of tenant rents, he attempted to balance farm efficiency with tenant farmer protection. However, with the intensification of the wartime regime, usury was banned in 1940, his store closed in 1941, and all private transactions were prohibited under the Food Control Ordinance of 1943. Kim Ho-gyeom was arrested and tortured on charges of illegal rice trading in 1944, and subsequently died in 1948.
