This study aimed to identify the current state of students' literacy skills, their causes, and suggest ways to improve them to ensure the smooth progress of lectures at universities, which are institutions of higher education. First, 266 undergraduate students at University P were tested on a 10-item EBS literacy test. The overall score was 5.94. Students clearly struggled with inferential and critical questions centered on practical texts, and they also struggled with conditional solutions, information extraction, and concept matching questions. The ○X type, which asks about vocabulary, also had a surprisingly low score of 52%, highlighting the seriousness of vocabulary, a fundamental component of literacy. Current students scored slightly higher than freshmen, and the overall percentage of students scoring 5 or lower approached 40%, further highlighting the growing severity of literacy issues. These results highlight the need for universities to conduct regular diagnostic assessments to assess students' literacy skills and to offer courses specifically designed to enhance literacy skills. Furthermore, it's necessary to improve lectures by implementing the Havruta method, which empowers students to become active and proactive participants in class. This allows them to express their thoughts both verbally and in writing, thereby enhancing their metacognition. Furthermore, universities should move beyond the traditional CSAT-based educational environment and instead cultivate comprehensive language skills, serving as a springboard for students to grow into self-directed citizens.

본 연구는 고등 교육기관인 대학에서 강의의 원만한 진행을 위한 학생들의 문해력 실태와 원인, 향상 방안에 대한 방향성을 제시하고자 하였다. 먼저 EBS의 문해 력 테스트 10개 문항을 P대학교에 재학중인 266명의 대학생에게 테스트한 결과, 전체 5.94개의 득점률을 기록하였다. 실용문을 중심으로 한 추론적·비판적 문제들 을 어려워하는 경향이 뚜렷했고, 조건을 적용하여 해결하거나 정보 추출형, 개념 매칭형 문제들도 쉽게 해결하지 못했다. 의외로 어휘력을 묻는 ○X 유형도 52%대 의 낮은 득점률을 보여서 문해력의 기본인 어휘력의 심각성도 보여주고 있다. 신입생보다는 재학생의 점수가 상대적으로 조금 높았고, 전체적으로 5점 이하의 점수 를 차지한 비율이 40%에 육박하여 갈수록 문해력의 심각성도 여실히 드러났다. 이러한 결과는 대학 자체적으로 정기적인 진단평가를 실시하여 학생들의 문해력 측 정이 주기적으로 이루어져야 하고, 문해력 향상을 위한 교과목 개설이 필요하다는 것도 보여준다. 나아가 학생이 수업의 능동적·주동적 주체가 될 수 있도록 하브루 타 방식으로 강의를 진행하여 학생들 스스로가 자신의 사고를 음성언어와 문자언어로 표현하여 메타인지를 높일 수 있는 강의로의 개선 방안도 필요하다. 대학은 기 존의 수능 방식의 교육 환경에서 벗어나 종합적인 언어 이해 능력을 길러 주체적 시민으로 성장할 수 있는 인재 양성의 발판의 장이 되도록 해야 한다.
