In this paper, we tried to briefly summarize domestic and foreign discussions on green finance and explore its applicability to the shipping industry. The climate crisis caused by global warming is pressing for the international community to respond. While various methods are being discussed, green finance is drawing attention as an important means of carbon neutrality, and Korea is also trying to join the global trend seriously. At sea, IMO is taking the leadership for the reduction of greenhouse gases generated by ship operation, and regulations can be seen to be in full swing from 2023. Accordingly, the Korean government is also pushing for a plan to introduce green finance to the shipping industry, centering on policy financial institutions. But, the Korean government, financial institutions, and the shipping industry tend to react passively to green finance. However, as the response to climate change can be seen as a scheduled future, it is necessary to be more active. While pursuing eco-friendly policies, Korean government should encourage private financial institutions to participate. And Korean shipping industry should closely observe the regulatory trends of international organizations and find ways to utilize green finance under a preemptive plan to respond in a timely manner.
