This study analyzes the concept of spectatorship embodied in the idea of the spect-actor proposed by theatre scholar and director Augusto Boal(1931-2009) and examines its manifestations through Forum Theatre and the Rainbow of Desire technique. Boal argued that, in response to oppressive social realities, spectators must become spect-actors, active subjects who transform theatrical narratives through direct action rather than passive reception. The term spect-actor, a compound of spectator and actor, refers to a participant who performs the role of the actor during the performance, reconstructing collective and personal issues on stage based on their own experiences. In Forum Theatre, the spect-actor intervenes in the performance to replace the protagonist’s actions and propose alternative outcomes, thereby transforming the spectator from a passive observer into an active agent and co-creator. The theatre thus becomes a rehearsal space for social change, and the spect-actor emerges as a liberated participant who transcends the conventional dichotomy between performance and reception. In contrast, in the Rainbow of Desire technique, the spect-actor engages with internalized oppression and self-censorship, expressing latent desires and emotions through physical embodiment. This process functions as a psychological rehearsal that releases internal repression and expands the possibility of self-awareness. The spect-actor, in this sense, becomes both a self-analyst and a flexible co-creator who explores personal conflicts and relationships through performative interaction. In both forms of theatre, the spect-actor appears as an autonomous subject who recognizes problems and initiates transformation through action. From this perspective, Boal’s notion of spectatorship redefines not only the structure and content of theatre but also the positionality of the audience within contemporary performance art. By dismantling the binary opposition between actor and spectator, Boal’s concept of the spect-actor offers a new model of participatory spectatorship grounded in the aesthetics of interaction and relation, suggesting that theatre can serve simultaneously as a site of social transformation and personal introspection.

본 연구는 연극학자이자 연출가 아우구스또 보알(Augusto Boal, 1931-2009)이 제시한 ‘관객-배우(spect-actor)’ 개념에 나타난 관객성을 분석하고, 그 양상을 토론연극(Forum Theatre)과 욕망의 무지개 기법(Rainbow of Desire)을 중심으로 고찰하였다. 관객(spectator)과 배우(actor)의 합성어로 구성된 이 용어는 연극의 진행 과정에서 관객이 배우의 역할을 수행하여 스스로 자신의 경험을 바탕으로 한 집단적이고 개인적인 문제를 무대 위에서 재구성하는 참여자를 뜻한다. 이에 따라 본 연구의 방법으로는 보알의 주요 저작과 이론을 문헌 분석의 틀 안에서 검토하고 대표적인 실천적 사례인 토론연극과 욕망의 무지개 기법을 비교하여 분석하 였다. 그리고 이를 통해 관객-배우 개념이 사회적이고 심리적인 차원에서 어떻게 구현되는지를 구체적으로 탐색하였다. 보알이 제시한 욕망의 무지개 기법의 관객-배우는 개인의 내면적 억압과 내적 자기 검열을 다루는 심리적 갈등을 탐색하며 신체적 표현을 통해 잠재된 욕망과 감정을 자연스럽게 드러낸다. 이는 내면의 억압을 해소하고 자기 인식의 가능성을 확장하는 심리적 리허설의 성격을 지니며, 따라서 욕망의 무지개 기법에서의 관객-배우는 자신의 내면을 깊이 있게 분석하는 자이자 유연한 관계를 형성하는 공동 창작자라고 정리할 수 있다. 두 연극 모두에서 관객-배우는 스스로 문제를 인식하고 행동을 통해 새로운 변화를 만들어가 는 주체적 존재로 나타난다. 즉, 이러한 분석을 통해 본 연구는 보알의 관객-배우 개념이 관객과 배우의 이분법을 해체하고 예술적 참여와 관계의 미학을 토대로 한 새로운 관객성을 제시했다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다고 할 수 있다. 이는 연극이 사회적 변화와 개인의 내면적 성찰을 동시에 촉발할 수 있는 참여적 예술 형태로 확장될 수 있음을 시사한다.
